If your mechanic is so stupid as to assume that the units own compressor can fully vacuum itself then he should sell his tools and look for another job.
Replacing these mufflers is common practice, all gas is lost from this leak, after welding in a new item, the whole unit is vacuumed with a dedicated multistage vacuum pump (ideally to less than 300 microns).
