Can thieves bypass the Immobilizer System?

Some of the latest model cars (e.g. Honda Civic Reborn) are coming with Immobilizer Key theft protection systems. As per car manufacturers, the car won't start unless the code (residing inside the key) matches with the code stored inside the micro-controller of the car's ignition system...

I want to know if it is possible for anybody (specifically a "car thief") to bypass this system somehow and steal the car.
In other words, how safe & fool proof is this system against car thefts?

We all know about the good old method of directly connecting the wires and starting the car which thieves use a lot.

immobilizers are paired to the ECU. Unless someone can read the original tag that the immobilizer chip has and then reprograms a key its not possible. But there are devices which can do this although they're very expensive, so common crooks would resort to showing you a gun if they really want the car.

yeah or may be they will just compromise on the side mirrors of a standing car, or may be the tires and rims for that matter !

by the way, I did not think Immobilizer really was of that much help, but if it really is, than thats a good thing, at least it can give thieves a tough time !

When my friend bought his baleno way back in 2004, we went to get it fitted with the car alarm, etc. The fitter wanted to try to check if he could bypass the immobilizer, and we agreed to let him. After 10-15 mins of trying (and constant jokes at his expense) he gave up! So, yes, the system works, but there must be devices now which, although being expensive, can bypass the system.

^ like i said earlier, there are devices which are specifically used for programming immobilizers which can do But the process is long and expensive.
