Car Basics Introductory Course

Hello Pakwheelers, I was just thinking that online education has really revolutionized education these days specially by multinational companies taking part and worlds top universities participation in edx and coursera.

Why not make an introductory course by the help of some software engineers and experienced people at this forum (e.g Xulfiqar) who know all the basics, thin and thick related to car maintenance and problems. A basic guide which could help people from all walks of life to know how to do simple tasks related to mechanical, electrician works. This would enable us to develop a society of informed car owners who can identify what's right and wrong for their car. Tips and tricks which could help fix your car if you are on a long drive or on motorway. A basic diagnostic techniques to check wiring etc could be great for all. One could identify which fluids to use for car and which wires to use, how to change plugs and clean them and all that basic random stuff which could immensely help us all. I know there are numerous threads over here dealing with many issues but it gets messy and rushy there. And an intro course would enable us to understand the fundamentals of car mechanics and it would be convenient to learn in a disciplined, organised and systematic way. Pakwheels could charge for that course for commercial gain as well..

It will be a daunting task but it could really do wonders for people and no one could be defrauded easily because awareness level would increase.

ok, i BISMILLAH with regular maintenance, for a very care-free drive...

More regular:
1. check water / coolant level in reserve tank and radiator (cold engine) - after 2/3 days.
2. air pressure in all the tyres (including spare wheel) - after 15 days (be more vigilant in summers).
3. check water level in battery - after 15 days or so.
4. check engine oil thru dip-stick - after a week or so (depending on engine condition).

one can easily cater the above mentioned 4 points by him/her-self.

1. kabhi kabhar occassionaly, do open the bonnet and check engine sound, fan belts and any loose wiring etc. there should be NO oil leakage from any part.
   
   Less regular:
   [I]6. power steering oil needs to be inspected on regular basis.
2. very very important to change the auto-transmisssion gear oil when ever it is due.

8. regular car wash and wax polish.
wash engine with very very light pressure, if necessary.

i do it myself with hose-pipe and a spray bottle filled with any detergent mixed with water and a half cup of petrol / diesel.
before engine wash, always do cover the parts like distributor, spark plugs, EFI injectors and other electronic parts with polythine sheets.
park the car in sun shine for some time and let the engine (and its parts) dry on its own.
once it is done, one can start the engine.

1. do inspect the front axle BOOTS, there should NOT be any greese around any of 4 boots.
   if the boots are not replaced at an early stage, axle(s) would have to be replaced then.

Thats real good thing you've done...

I am not sure about tire pressure...my Dad used to drive on highways & get tire bursts everytime...so the mechanic advised that don't check the tire pressure before leaving...just go along as you were driving in city!! and the problem was solved.

but this was in Saudi land where heat is scorching & roads are hotter than frying pans!! We even had specific (heat-resistant) tyres...

Well what i can advise you from my limited knowledge is:

1) Check Tire pressure before setting off.
2) With the Lug wrench in the car, make sure all the nuts are tightened.
3) Check the engine oil and the water levelin the car.
4) Make sure the stepnee is in good conditon.
5) top up the window washer fluid and other essential fluids.
6) Keep a spare water bottle with you for emergencies

Other wise you are good to go. Experts can help you even more.

A Advice my father gave and that i aslo experienced is that NEVER set on a long journey after getting work done on your car. You never what might go wrong. Wait a few days before setting off for journey.

It all depends on these technicians, knowledge house people of pakwheels. Maybe they can collaborate with any technical university and offer a short online course. Virtual University comes into my mind for this purpose. It will help thousands of people and produce informed car owners.
