Car Care and Detailing Dreams (Part 3)

A quick How-To for the chap who is new to the detailing world.

* My test subject car is a 93 mehran with extreme oxidation and single stage paint ( No clear coat ). The paint on a new car is far more in better condition so do the steps properly and you will be astounded with the results.

* These results were achieved with a simple foam applicator pad and straight line application motions. Since the paint on your car is new, this method should suffice. However for old cars with badly swirled paints, its recommended to use a DA/Rotary. Thats somthing for the future.

1) Test Panel: I cleaned half of the roof to start working on.

2) Claying: I clayed the lower section and taped it off. Time for a quick test.

3) Compound: You wont be needing to do this step. I had to since I had oxidation on the paint. The picture below shows how the paint has become clear but it still lacks gloss.

4) Polishing: A light abrasive that helps removing any medium to light imperfections while also removing haziness caused by the compound itself.

5) Glazing: This is a non abrasive paint imperfection masker. Any swirls/scratches that could not be fixed by compounding/polish will be filled up with this. I also used a light coat of wax after the glaze to protect the paint since a glaze itself has no protecting properties.

6) 50/50 Shots: Time for some real shots eh? Note that a single stage paint is not as reflective as a clear coated paint. The picture below shows you what you can achieve. Notice the lower section of the roof has been cleaned from any dust.

3 Shots explaining everything about how the sun should look when seen through a cars paint. Note that this was a quick 10-15 minute detail. I still noticed some very light swirls on the treated section which would have been corrected by putting more work into it. But that's as good as you can get with a hand applicator. I focused the lens directly at the sun so a) The paint wont look so RED and b) the surroundings have turned almost black. Its like looking straight at the sun with your naked eye

Dont be so lazy/rude. Look at the pictures once to find each step with products used.
The man made a lot of effort to share his techniques. We ought to have some decency towards him.

Some weeks back I corrected the black Corolla's paint and it was only washed once after that and under cover since then, the inside of the cover is of polyester.
Now when I pulled the car out in the sun, the swirls have reappeared out of the blue, I feel like banging my head into a wall.
What could be wrong here?

That cover might be keeping some dust inside, and it may have rubbed the surface of the car when putting on or removing.

Generally speaking, car covers are not recommended for this purpose.

Sharing some of my work.. really liked these pictures that I took under open sky. The reflections were killing and crystal clear on this Vigo.. did 2 of the client's Vigos. Both coated with GTechniq EXO coating single layer only!

This is not the parachute one which are normally available, it is slightly expensive and I use all the precautions when placing it on the car.

Welcome to the world of detailing my friend! Most of the products such as compounds, polishes, glazes, waxes, sealants only mask the defects so that they look good temporarily... it will take you quite some time and experience to realize how much serious of a matter proper machine polishing is.. and how easily swirls can still reoccur!

I am saying all this in a very positive way, I have been through all that frustration before I could find my mix of secret recipe! Choose my machines, experimented with pads, experimented with products, techniq.. etc! Takes quite long to master...

I know, its crazy! Vigos look so paindu with all that fake chrome and big monograms and badges! But many people like em... infact a pimped up vigo has more retail value than a standard one!

Nothing wrong with a Vigo and some chrome as well. If they get debadged, they will look much better.

In fact, they are the full option "Denali" and yet with so much chrome etc, they look better than a Vigo.

Well thats not a fair comparison
Those are OEM fittings and the ones on the vigos are usually veeery cheap

Hahaha well this was the first time ever I compounded a car with a DA using Megs UC, followed by UP, #7 glaze, then 845 and then Souveran. Seemed quite nice initially and then garaged the car. Today when I took it out after almost two weeks and pulled it out in the sun, the only thing left for me to do was pull my hair off my head

Thanku ali. About the new mehrans, i'm sure they should have clear coats because that's like a standard now everywhere in the world.

About your swirl issue, whats compound/polish had you used? The swirls may have been introduced when the car was washed that one time?

Oh well, UC and UP aint exactly the best combo to use with a power tool. You might wanna use their 105/205 combo. Chances are that you had merely masked most of the swirls that now came out after the wash.

I used UC followed by UP and this was the outcome.

The swirling is light right now but to me that is an eyesore.

Hmm!
Thats why I tell people Ultimate compound is not a good cutting compound. Its mild and definitely not for Pakistani application!
Also DAs dont do much tbh.. good for polishing only, not for defect removal!

Means I'll have to get a rotary sometime in the future as well which compound do you suggest with DA?
