No since on most modern cars, this section is covered with a plastic cover. However washing the plastic part with a detergent can cause it to dry out and over time become brittle. It's best to have a spray on protectant (a cheap one). One squeez of the trigger and wipe the section with a mf cloth. Thats it.
Agreed what's said about the wheels being washed with a shampoo rather than a detergent. A valet company guy posted a customers 2 piece wheels to which he insisted be washed with a car shampoo but the customer was using some kinda detergent. The stuff had eaten away at the rim of the wheel behind the facia. It was like termites eating through wood.
