Car chassis number

I am looking to buy a particular Mitsubishi lancer 1997. The chassis number on it matches the chassis number on the bill of lading and shipment advise but it doesn't match with the chassis number mentioned in the registration documents although the engine no. is same on all documents. What is the reason for this and should I go through with the deal?

It could be a mistake at Excise while entering the data and after that no one owner bothered to get it changed due to any reason
