In my VW - the radiator is fit at an angle - meaning its not straight against the radiator support (front patti etc whatever).. It tucks underneath it at the right side and is in the engine bay at the left side, next comes the condenser which is also fit exactly like the radiator, this fitting leaves a void on the left of the car beside the headlamp, When I got my car the little plastic panel thats supposed to go between the radiator and the headlamp was missing which was causing irregular radiator temperature.
I cut a panel from ABS plastic myself and fit it there - and sealed it off with some used bonnet gasket rubbers and silicone. I did this all the way to the front grill which is about 5 inches. It restored cooling system performance back to perfect along with A/C performance.
Previously the condenser would heat soak itself and the cooling fan would be spinning full speed after a long run. After that the cooling fan very ocassionally kicked to high speed after a long run. I later got the original VW part from dubai scrap..
I think it was removed by a dimbulb mechanic because it interferes in removing the radiator support in order to remove the radiator.
