These files contain maps of cities properly mapped with gps coordinates. No need of internet. That information is already available for phone in its memory

my mobile has google map n it tells way n all route thingy but it uses edge for downloading
wat i was askin is to tell my position fone will need to connect to net,it can tell location on its on..i mean how fone gonna now where it is right now

Mobiles with Built in GPS doesn't need any data plan to acquire GPS coordinates (N xx" W xx" etc ) from the satellites. If u dont have maps installed on your phone, it connects using your data services to the internet and display you position or route after matching your coordinates acquired by built in GPS.

So if u have maps installed than there is no need to connect to internet.

it dont need gprs... mine works free... google needs gprs
