Two teens were racing on Mount Pleasant Road in their parents' Mercedes-Benzes. The luxury cars allegedly hit speeds of up to 140 kilometres per hour in an area where the posted speed limit is 50 km/h.
The accident happened about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday evening when one car collided with the cab as it made a left turn near an intersection with St. Clair Avenue. The collision crushed the taxi against a pole.
"Examination of the crash site, examination of the vehicles, and the damage that was sustained by the vehicles is indicative of a high-speed impact," Police Det. Wally Watts said.
He added that approximately nine witnesses have come forward.
Investigators found a copy of the video game Need for Speed in one of the cars. The game involves street racing, drag racing and pursuit racing, where players attempt to evade police. Police are reportedly exploring a connection between the accident and the game.
Tahir Khan, a cab driver and 46-year-old Pakistani man who has lived in Canada for six years, died instantly.
Khan was scheduled to become a Canadian citizen on Friday morning. Friends believe he was planning to have his wife and family join him from Pakistan.
A memorial service has been arranged by Khan's Toronto friends at the city's Islamic Foundation Mosque on Saturday at 1 p.m. His body will then be flown to Pakistan for burial.
A memorial fund has been established through the CIBC. Donations can be made at any branch by citing transit number 00402 and account number 2168332.
At Friday's citizenship ceremony, the judge and group of new Canadians observed a moment of silence for Khan.
Scarborough MP Tom Wappel is encouraging the federal government to posthumously grant citizenship to Khan.
