Hey fellas! Long time reader and big fan of this awesome forum, but first post here.
I'll cut to the chase. I drive a Khyber (1996). It's got a good engine and is mechanically pretty satisfactory, as well as affordable to drive and maintain. However, it's wiring is all over the place. Patched up on a lot of points, relays hanging here and there etc. You get the picture, it's a mess.
So I run into electrical problems quite frequently with this car. Small problems, but big annoyances nonetheless (I'm generally very neurotic about things not being in top functioning order). It's so bad that fixing one problem always leads to 10 other electrical malfunctions because of the poor state of wiring overall.
Since I don't really have the means to buy a newer car any time soon and considering that I've found my Khyber quite reliable for me for the most part (considering my daily commuting needs), I intend to keep it for the foreseeable future.
Now, my electrician has been recommending a rewiring job for a long time. I generally ignore him, but lately I've been giving it some serious thought.
The thing is, I'm not sure if it would be worth it, so I thought I should take some second opinion from people wiser than I on PakWheels
So, here are some factors to consider:
There's nothing seriously wrong with electrical functions of the car at this moment. But I can't say anything for the future.
The car is very dear to me and getting a new car is not an option anytime soon.
Keeping these in mind, would you guys recommend a rewiring job? I have a few reservations that are making it difficult for me to make up my mind:
To what extent will the electrician have to take apart my car to get the rewiring job done? Could it mess up my mechanical systems/performance by any means?
For instance, my car always starts on a half-self. Is there any possibility that this or any other part of its mechanical functioning might be affected?
Would he have to take apart my dashboard etc.? If so, I'm kinda worried if he isn't able to put it back together firmly and if it starts making annoying noises while driving. That would really irritate me.
He quoted me a price of 10k for the whole job (minus the relays and switches). I think that's a little high considering he's just a small ilaqay ka electrician, but he usually does a pretty fine job. He reassured me he'd use high quality wires with appropriate gauges for every component of the car depending on its power requirements. I think he is a capable electrician. At least that's how I've found him so far. But I'm very ignorant about cars in general and have no idea about market rates for most kind of jobs. Do you think he's asking for a fair price? If not, what would be a reasonable cost for my car?
I'd REALLY appreciate if you guys could help put these nagging questions in my mind to rest.
Thanks a lot guys!
