At a joint press conference held in Washington D.C., BMW and Carbon Motors announced a strategic partnership that will see the German automaker supplying the American law enforcement vehicle manufacturer with diesel engines.

The agreement calls for delivery of BMW's 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engines complete with cooling and exhaust gas system and 6-speed automatic transmission for the Carbon E7 rear-wheel drive purpose-built police vehicle.

In the U.S. market 335d and X5 35d, the straight-six diesel produces 265-horsepower at 4,200 rpm and 425 lb-ft of peak torque between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm, while returning 23mpg city / 36mpg highway and 19mpg city / 26mpg highway respectively.

Carbon Motors, which was founded in 2003, said it is estimated that the U.S. law enforcement fleet consumes around 1.5 billion gallons of gasoline and emits an estimated 14 million tons of CO2 annually.

The company believes that the BMW-diesel-powered Carbon E7 will cut both figures by up to 40 percent.

Don't use swear words.
Back seats in police cruisers are not made for relaxation and recreation. Most of the times they are used by people who have been wounded e.g. in a drug bust and are bleeding, or by drivers who are arrested for DUI (driving under influence of alcohol or other narcotics) and they generally throw up. Sometimes very nervous detainees also empty their bowels/bladder in the car. This means seats have to be cleaned regularly hence they are made of vinyl (plastic) with no upholstery. Also, the seats are meant for a trip to the nearest police station and not for long highway drives.

Looks like ford and holden have got some competition now to take care of.. But in any case, it wouldn't be before 2012 that the E7s could be commissioned for duty, as production is said to start thereabouts...

And the E7 seems a pretty nice and potent car, it wouldn't be long before some sheikh adds it to his repertoire of vehicles...

The downer about the ford's taurus is that its a FWD car, or so as I think..

I really think both crown vic and the charger are the best looking cop cars.

Here in virginia we have a lot of unmarked chargers most of them with alloys.If one appears in your rear view mirror, you better be within the speed limit because they don't take a second to light you up.

Yeah, I had read about that too, but then it was too late when I realised it

AWD version would be the one that the law enforcement agencies would be going for then... because bum-draggers or FWD vehicles as they are known, are no good for close pursuits...
