Hi Guys,
I am installing a carputer in my Civic 95. Configurations includes;

*Intel Atom Dual Core Board Mini itx with 5.1 Audio Output & Built in graphics Controller
*4 Gb DDR3 RAM
*500 GB HD
*120w DC-DC Power Supply
*GPS Receiver
*7" Touchscreen VGA Monitor
*Infrared CMOS Night Vision Camera
*Mini Itx Casing

The hardware will arrive in mid of October!

Anyone has done this before? or anyone has any experience with the carputers? Comments & Suggestions will be highly appreciated!

well i have done research on it and almost did install one. infact i have one lying around with me that i purchased for testing purpose before we ordered the full spec one. so, what do u wanna know

dont get a hdd a ssd will serve better here as it is less sensitive to shock. i would say get a 64 gig ssd and plug a 500 gig portable hdd. the ssd for the os and drivers

Hey thanks for the nice advice... as i fortgot to notice that hdd will create problems with jerks/shocks. I will definitely look for the alternatives.

First, what is/was the specification of ur carputer?
Second, do you know anyone who designs dashboards? i want to embed by touchscreen into it, and for that i need to redesign my front panel.

nicely done bro i did something like this in my city 6 yr ago,,,, did'nt had a mini itx..... u can understand the mess i would of made but it was fun ,,,, used it for 6 month i think when some charsi tried to steel my 10" lcd,,, broke my window glass,,, lcd survived due to my wiring, so i removed it,,,,

Thanks bro, even with mini itx .. it was a nightmare! :).
Yea, Security is the main concern here, due to which we are reluctant to implement or use such systems freely. But in the end it was a fun doin job.

Other then navigation it has wireless USB broadband, Audio connected to my Amplifier so you can enjoy some quality music on the go. Mic embedded in the dashboard for voice conversation through skype or msn or gtalk etc. And other then that I am working on a circuit + software interface through which I will be able to interact with the car controls through PC, like controlling AC Cooling, displaying hood, trunk and interior temperatures, controlling windows, lights, car real time monitoring with statistical reports of mileage & routes etc.

Yar most of the components are bought from amazon as we dont have VGA Touchscreen monitor, GPS Receiver, DC-DC Power Supplies in our market (or i was not able to find them). "Approximately" it cost me around 50-60k.

which car do you have? if it has OBD, you can hook up an OBD-USB (or BT) device to read stats off of your ECU. An OBD-ELM327 device has maximum compatibility. Then there are plenty of apps available to display ecu data.

As for the other controls, when you do get it done. Please share!

I want to set up a carputer in my civic but I fear it will only invite thieves. Thus i am looking for a quality 1Din screen solution (with a removable faceplate) that grabs a lot less attention... Or i might have to build a custom dash to hold a 7" android tablet (still scratching my head on this one).

oh wait. is that a civic? did you drill up the dash for your lcd mount?

also, switch to a laptop hard drive. or better (but a lot more expensive) SSD. A cheaper solution is using multiple flash drives. I recommend 64GB Corsair Flash Voyager (water/shock/heat resistant) pen drives (given your bios supports usb booting).

u cud have simply put a common laptop in there...

put laptop in the dashboard, it wud fit with some adjustments. connect monitor cable to laptop. and install a touch screen monitor . that wud cost u almost same amount but get u better specs..

laptops are not really meant for crammed spaces and they tend to overheat unless provided circulation. IMO the best bet is fitting one in the boot.
