When I was doing my O-Levels in 1975, we did a physics experiment in the school lab in which we had to do copper plating. As I remember it was not too difficult. Only trick was to accurately control the current flowing through the solution. We did that using a Wheatstone bridge.

I did a research my self a while ago and learnt that the acids used in process are extremely dangerous and cancerous in nature if inhaled even in minor quantites second they can damage flesh (alot) if get in contact may be accidently.... I was researching in order to rechrome some of my rides stuff which was fading from chromed area... and the local chrome facilties here in lahore do a very poor Job its a waste of money litterly ...

But after researching I dumped the idea to DI-my self becuase of high risk ...

the only difference was that I was researching for Nickel/chrome plating.. but I assume its the same process..

please guide if I understood it wrong ?

25 years later when I did my O'levels... I believe the experiment was quite the same. I think you are talking about Electroplating.... where we coat a thin layer of one metal on to another with electrolysis. Problem is electroplating do not work for alloys..... we can gold plate the foot pegs ....... but we cant brass coat them as brass is an alloy. Therefore to attain the brass finish is not as simple as electroplating..... but something a little more complex..... something like chrome or maybe galvanization.

In the beginning I too thought it was copper plated...... but the way it shines...... its not copper I suspect.

I did a bit of research myself too. I wanted to do Hard chrome myself. Normal chrome is really very delicate.
The actual electroplating of nickel and chromium is not that dangerous...... but to degrease and clean the metal before the process starts require handling extremely dangerous acids such as hydro-chrolic acid, sulfuric acid and even hydro fluoric acid.......hydrofluoric acid is extremely dangerous...... if you haveseen "Breaking Bad" ...... its the same stuff Walter White used to dissolve a whole motorcycle and a human in a drum.

Yes electroplating is what is being talked about. For copper plating dilute sulphuric acid is used as it is cheap and easily available. Regarding brass plating, I do not wish to engage into an argument but I feel that it is required to mention that the finest chrome plating is called triple plating. It comprises of the first layer being brass, the second nickel and the third chrome. It is possible to plate brass. So if Yaser Sb.'s plater has done true brass plating, then he has done something no one does in Pakistan (at least in my knowledge). Now if he could plate the next two layers - nickel and chrome on top of the brass. He will be the only one in the whole of the country doing triple plating and I personally will make a trip out to him for my plating needs

the brass coating wasnt enough strong to handle foot peg rough handling needs and he did that for me after many years so maybe practicing with brass platting might give it more experience and becomes enough strong. wait for my next post

green arrow this part has accepted brass plating in first attempt
red arrow it wasnt accepting brass plating so its now coverd with brass sheet
and black 1 was also not taking so after many attempts it has accepted it but you can see color diffirance

khair to me it was learning process i have to make more strong foot peg in future from total bronze

OK a foot in mouth situation! Turns out you can actually do plate brass with electroplating.

Are you talking about hard chrome of sometimes called as industrial chrome.
Its a bit different than decorative chrome but is a lot tougher than usualy stuff.
Motorcycle shock shafts are hard chromed....... everything else on the bike will rust away but the those shafts always remain rust free. Thats why I wanted to do hard chrome at home....... turns out its quite tricky and you need a lot of practice to get it right.

No worries about the foot. You have summed up the difference between hard chrome and decorative chrome perfectly. To your comments I'll add that the deposited layer of chrome if measure in inches, will be about 10 thou 15 thou 20 thou for hard chrome while decorative chrome layer is much thinner, about 2 to 5 thou.

Interestingly enough, all the classic car owners I have met in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad cry about poor chroming facilities in Pakistan.

Hard Chrome has so many industrial applications..... I really can not digest the fact that there are no facilities from where you can get parts hard chromed. There must someone. I think there should a different thread for this quest.

I noticed you are from Karachi. There are hard chrome places in SITE. I have had piston rods hard chromed from there. Also saw hard chrome on moulds for plastic parts. Can't remember the name of the place. It was over 30 years ago.

I noticed you are from Karachi. There are hard chrome places in SITE. I have had piston rods hard chromed from there. Also saw hard chrome on moulds for plastic parts. Can't remember the name of the place. It was over 30 years ago.

Two senior members helped me out locating such facilities. One was pointed out in SITE near Pepsi factory while the other in Garden Karachi.

Its the same brass/gold finish we see on front fork of modern sports bikes. I'm not able to locate a facility in Karachi but there is one in Lahore. Titanium Nitrite is harder than hard chrome.

well nice thread you have made. my example is ( hathi nikal gaya dum phans gaye) i brasse some parts and i loved it when i installed few parts on it and its looks excellent to me khair the brass color has its own antique look and there is no replacement for this color the tank cap and headlight holder ring was not accepting brass color than i tried and wasted huge amount on it finaly i bought brass paint (the brass paint even useless for me . i don't need hard brass man i just need brass bhaly hi month bad ur jaye i can spray liquor . i don't like titanium color not at all it has modern looks and i don't like . posting some pics will xplain

Exactly, I'm too are interested in that antique brass look as I have a vintage style bobber in progress (work stopped about a year ago). Original brass actually ages with time and looks really nice on vintage motorcycles. You are right about Titanium Nitride..... It really is modern.

Maybe the reason why the headlamp holder and fuel cap isnt accepting because maybe they weren't prepared or pre-treated. I mean your footpegs were plain steel so no problem in plating whereas, those 2 items were originally covered with factory chrome and maybe the chrome has not completely stripped down before brass plating. Chrome works in mysterious ways.
