Italian tune up is a double edged sword especially for modern T-GDI engines. In theory it can work (specially for older engines), but for new ones, not necessarily (high revs can even have an opposite effect, i.e. increase carbon deposits due to more blow by because of lower tension in piston rings of newer T-GDI cars).
The key is to get the engine hot enough on a constant load for a time long enough for carbon deposits to break down. How hot enough? Varies from engine to engine. How long enough? Jury is still out on that one. Newer ILSAC GF6 oils help in preventing carbon deposits from building up but won't break down existing deposits. Here's a complete video on the subject.
