I owned a charade 86 turbo diesel almost 8 years back.
About the turbo diesel engine:
In terms of performance turbo diesel is better, but it's still a tortoise compared to a petrol engine.
Turbo will not last long, when I bought the car the Turbo was bad and I had to get another one from Bilal Gunj, when I sold the car more than three years later, the replacement Turbo had also gone bad. The problem... diesel smoke chokes the turbo fan.
If you plan on running the air-conditioner most of the time, then the engine will not last long.
All it takes to kill this engine is overheat it once. My mechanic reported to me one incident in which he left overhauled an engine and left the engine started for 15 minutes, due to some problem in the cooling system, the engine overheated and seized. Another rebuild followed.
You have to religiously follow oil change intervals.
Mileage is good you can get about 15km/ltr. But that is not really awesome by today's standards.
Don't push the car to its limit, drive it nice and slow and the engine will last long, but not as long as Toyota diesels, they can take a lot of beating and last much much longer.
After following my mechanics instructions, I owned this car for over three years and didn't spend one penny on the engine. The rest of the car is a much different story
The non-turbo diesel is a tortoise who has lost a leg
much slower, unfortunately, I don't have much info on this engine.
On the whole, I would say Charade Turbo diesel is a failure. The engine is too slow (even with the turbo). It has to be treated like a baby. It does not last as long as Toyota Diesels. I would say sell the Charade and get an 86 or 88 corolla, it's a much more reliable car.
