This morning I had to go for a meeting and when I tried to start the car, there was a clicking and the starter tried to start the car but was unable to. DEAD BATTERY.
I will share my experience so that others may take some advantage. This car comes with a maintenance free battery. Though they are convenient but have an undesirable property. One minute they are fine and the very next minute dead. NO WARNING. The other maintenance batteries with filler plugs give ample warning before dying. I called the dealer and told him what if I repalced the battery, will the car require a battery re-learn as in German cars especially BMWs. Hear is the conversation:
Me: Will the car need to be scanned by the factory scanner for any reset?
Dealer: Yes, the check engine light will need a fault code erase. But you are not allowed by Ghandhara to buy any old battery from the market. Only genuine battery is allowed to be fitted.
Me: OK, as I will be travelling out of Islamabad next week, do you have a battery I can get from you. And how much is it?
Dealer: We don't have it in stock and it will take a while to get it for me and it is 95,000/-
Me: WHATTTT??? is it made of gold?
Dealer: The previous price was 220,000!! then Ghandara reduced it to 95,000!
Me: So what am I supposed to do? Park the car for the next God knows how many weeks till you get the battery.
With this I went to work on the battery. I was certainly no going to let the car sit for weeks on my drive. There was enough juice in the battery to unlock the doors but not enough to crank the engine. My first mistake was to try to crank 3-4 times. This further killed the battery to the point that various modules went off line due to low voltage. I have a battery charger that has a function to revive dead batteries in 90 sec (enough to get one start). I tried this and sure enough the car started but Auto stop light and check engine light were on. After letting it run for a few minutes and letting the charger top up the battery (it was showing 70% on the charge gauge (that is bad). I took the battery out, went to my neighborhood battery place and was pleased to get an almost identical battery (spec wise). Battery went in and I started the car, all lights went out except the check engine light.
Original battery:
12V - 70Apm-hr. Cold cranking Amps = 680A suitable for Auto Stop. DIN-888
Replacement battery:
Daewoo, 12V - 72 Amp-hr. Cold starting Amps = 625A DIN-888
So not quite the same spec but close enough to get my car going. Next I went to the dealer who charged 1500/- to reset the ECU error code. Car is ready for the 400km (one way) trip. InshAllah.
