I know its been discussed many times but I did try to find out on the forums and the only useful bit of info is quoted below. Further more some guys were saying that disc brakes are better than ABS.
Those were some old threads and I really couldn't find out what I wanted to know.

upgrading to abs
Your help will be appreciated.
My civic is 97 vti automatic. I think front are brake pads and rear there are drums.
I'd like to know the cost of the complete setup.
1) I heard/read somewhere that it'd cost around 10k, is this figure right?
No, more than this
2) Will it include all the things that have been quoted below?
~30k - Complete suspension (shocks, springs, steering rack, control arms, trailing arms etc) front disk, rear drums or all 4 disks fitted with tone rings and abs wheel sensors
~5k abs modulator unit or pump
~5k for the abs control unit and fuse box
~3k for the abs brake booster and master cylinder
~500 for the proportioning control valve
also add around 5k for the mechanic and electrician work
3) Will there some update be required in the ECU?
No, though both controllers share the same DLC (data link connector)
4) Can I get the ABS light for civic 97 meter?
You can wire any unused light in the cluster or better buy a new meter with abs light
5) What does the light indicate? That setup is fine as a whole or not?
Sends out the blinks (same like the engine check light) which correspond to the particular DTC, where each code has its own significance
6) Should I go for ABS or disc brakes?
ABS ensures effective braking so that the car do not skid due to locking of the wheels, can't be related to disk or drums as it comes both in all disks and rear drums brake setups
