Civic X Cold Start Problem

The issue lies with the tensioner, while the CVT is functioning well. I’m looking for recommendations on tensioners. Workshops in the market suggest that the Thailand-made tensioner performs just fine, so there’s no need to spend a hefty amount on the original one.

i already told you it was the tensioner problem. the best bet would be to get the part from honda as it would atleast be genuine and zero meter part although it would be costly.

Honda Drive Inn quoted me 75k for the tensioner and labor. This cost does not include the belt, which will also need to be replaced eventually. In comparison, I received a quote of 16k from a reputable local workshop, which includes the belt. All parts are original Honda Thailand.

Dear, can you confirm that from where did you get the above quote? I mean are you located in Islamabad? if yes then share the location of the workshop otherwise if someone else may guide about the recommended workshop for honda civic 2018 model related maintenance etc, would highly appreciate.

Hi,

Has any one faced grinding noise issue on cold start up in winters ? The noise comes for a short while may be like 1, 2 seconds right after car starts and vanishes.
Sounds like as if starter is stuck. The same kind of noise you hear when you turn ignition key while car is already started.

No noise while shifting gears, the sounds appears in N right after car starts.

Has any one experienced this issue ? The issue is random and does not occur every morning.

Car is Civic X Oriel 2017.

Yes, I'm facing the same issue from past 2 3 days and this only happens when the car is parked overnight and I start the next day/morning. I'm not sure what could be the issue, could be related to the ignition itself or it can be either timing belt or it's that engine oil takes few seconds before lubricating the parts therefore that sound is present there.

Do let me know if you come across any solution or more insight in this regard.

issue is its not reproduceable to show it at dealership.
my hunch is that its starter motor which gets stuck and does not disengage itself in timely manner on startup.

verbal discussion with dealership says its auto timing adjuster noise. But i wonder it never happened before why now.

So far i am clueless. things i have ruled out are.
1. weak battery
2. tensioner bearing

Changed both, nothing fixed.

I believe, physical inspection at dealership or any other reputable workshop might help to fix it. I'm a bit occupied these days so will try to visit someone as soon as I'll get a chance but since it's happening to multiple cars, it should be a known issue to them so fix should be known as well.

By the way, which engine oil is being used in your car? I'm using 0w20, car model is 2018 driven around 85k.

last time when I visited Honda dealership they had no clue as if its not a known issue. Also issue was not reproduceable on site.
i am using Honda 5w30 from day 1.
Car is 2017 model around 100k driven.

Do you have a video to share. i want to know if its the same sound. ?

I had the same issue when I had the Civic-X 2018 model. Cringing/Grinding sound on start-up in the winter morning.
Unable to reproduce at the dealership.
I made a video and showed that to the dealership.
They took out the starter motor and greased it up and issue was resolved.

Yes there is a starter grinding noise from the 1.8 honda engine in winters. It was present in both my 8th gen and 10th gen cars. I believe this noise to be from the bendix of the starter. The noise stops as soon as the starter stops turning. If the noise is coming during the early morning drive it cannot be the starter.

I called one of the honda dealership explaining this issue and the person shared the same solution asking me to get the starter motor greased, I might pay him a visit to get this done.

i wonder if starter motor is a exposed part to catch dust and dirt over time which requires servicing ?

My car was is in warranty so no charges.
It's a labor job so charges should not be high. But job is of 3+ hours.
