No offense but I would rather want my family to be safe than to be praised by others on how 'modern' a car I chose. City is extremely unsafe especially for rear occupants as it lacks rear safety beam, rear bumper guard and guard rails behind seat. We have already seen here in a thread on PW, how a brand new city was reduced to a crumpled tin when it was hit from the back by a GLI.

Yes City, has a better and faster engine which is more economical, but frankly it should not take precedent over safety of your loved ones. GLI has all these safety measures mentioned above and it is also bigger and heavier and better built compared to city which means more comfort, and better safety. Not to mention it has ABS, EBD and BA.

Also let me add that if you want to be distinguished, buy a S class or Rolls Royce. These GLIs and Citys and even Civics and Corollas are not meant to distinguish you on the road nor are meant to be raced on. Not to mention that a rare car also translates into pathetic resale.

In the end, everyone is entitled to his opinion and I respect yours, but just wanted to intervene so that OP does not makes a decision in ignorance

Btw let me make it clear that I am part of no army, neither Honda nor Toyota. When I was given a choice, I opted for Honda Civic (over Altis) and would still do again. However it is my personal preference as I rate certain features more (such as shape and drive) over others. But still I maintain that both cars Toyota and Honda are equal. I try to present a rational opinion whereever I can. Does not means people start classifying me in their armies

yes; cuz it remains comfy...the gear-shifts of City is best in this class..GLI is jerky...I bought GLI after keeping City for 15 months; could not bear GLI's gearshifts and sold it within the month...I am going to try 1.6 Cruisetronic next; lets see!

brother we were going through same confusion earlier, you can see my earlier threads for details.

Now what i can advise you from my experience is "IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR REQUIREMENTS". All of these three are good, but if want want to pick one, only your requirements can help you to make decision. Here i will try to make it simple for you assuming that you want a good safe family car for a long run.

GLI
Good Resale, Not so good on consumption infect 1.8 Altis and 1.3 GLI are somewhat similar in consumption. Bad power to wait ratio. Value for money a "big No".

City
Bad Resale, Good fuel economy, Nice Boot space, good acceleration, Value for money "NO".

Swift
Dont know about resale, good fuel economy, boot space is not good, filled up with all the goodies(DLX version), no need to spent a big amount on after market stuff after purchase. Value for money "Yes" if you are comparing it with GLI or City.

So if you are searching for a good family car for a long run use for your family Swift DLX is the best choice, the only drawback which i see i small boot space but how often do one needs it, and also if its second car in the family this is no problem then. So my advice will be to go for swift eyes closed you wont regret it.

i suggest that u test drive all cars urself n then decide.

city owners will always suggest city, the same goes for corolla n swift owners

we own a swift. we test drove it first n then decided. but our requirement was a hatchback as we already have a saloon, so it also depends on ur demands. a swifts boot is pretty small but has a powerful engine, though a little thirsty but that myt be because i'm a bit throttle happy. i have also found its rear leg space a bit cramped. a lot of 6 footers have complained to me about this.
if ur going for a hatchback(that is u dont need alot of boot space, have rear passengers less than 6 feet), this is the best buy.

corolla has excellent resale as stated before.

and i have no experience about city so can't comment on it.
