Dear members, I want to know if the procedure I am going to describe is alright for changing the coolant of my Lancer 2006. I know the traditional way i.e. just open the drain nut at the bottom of the radiator, drain the coolant, put the nut back, refill the radiator, run the car (idle) for 10 mins, shut off car, open the drain nut again, drain the radiator again, repeat till the water is clear and finally refill with coolant in the end etc.
But I once did the following procedure on my Lancer 2006 and plan to do the same on my Honda City 2006:
1-With engines off, I removed the top pipe leading to the radiator (the thick pipe from where the hot water from engine is fed back to the radiator).
2-Started the car (the car was cold).
3-Upon starting the car, the pipe which I have opened started to spill water.
4-At the same time I kept feeding the radiator with fresh water from a tap/pipe so that water keeps circulating and the radiator is not empty at any time.
5-I kept feeding tap water to the radiator, while the top pipe kept on draining water while the engine was running. i.e. water kept circulating.
6-This way all the dirty/rusty/old coolant drained while fresh water kept pouring in from the radiator while the car was running.
7- When I saw that the water coming from drain pipe was clear I started to add coolant to the radiator instead of tap water while the car was still running. The moment I saw that the top pipe is now throwing green water (i.e. the the coolant has circulated) I turned off the car, attached the top pipe back to the radiator.
8-Let the air bleed with the radiator cap off and started the car, any drop in water level was replaced with coolant. In short, I ensured that the amount of coolant which should go in the car was there i.e. 50/50 mix.
Now, was it alright? I mean I did this to my Lancer 2006 in July 2013 and till today (Nov 2016) I havent seen any problem with my car's cooling system. It does not drop the water level in the radiator at all.
Now I am thinking to replace the coolant again as my car was standing for like months unused, should I follow the same procedure?
Actually, this way you dont need to get under your car to open the radiator drain nut and this way as the water is circulating you can ensure that your entire system is flushed without opening the thermostat etc.
Please advice.
Last question: I used the ZIC coolant, green color bottle (1 liter). How many bottles should be added? Is this ZIC coolant diluted or concentrated?
