Corolla sound proofing

Hi Everyone,

I got a corolla gli and I'm more than a little underwhelmed by the soundproofing of the cabin. Especially along the side pillars of the vehicle, I can hear a bit too much of every vehicle that passes by the sides of my car, and it causes me to turn my head everytime it happens! :S

It's very frustrating, our alto has better sound proofing (and those guys don't even try to do it properly) than what I have on my hands right now.

Any advice? Will talking to a Toyota dealership help? I'm afraid they'll just try to go around the issue & not resolve my problem. While this may not be a huge problem for a majority of people, it irritates me a lot.. because I'm the kind of guy that immediately notices if the window on the back has even a few cm opened, if you know what I mean ... !

Very dissatisfied with this aspect of the car.

if u want to go for a proper soundproofing of the doors/pillars, u will need to have atleast 10k-15k.

Also a proper sound deadner will also not only cost you some nice $$ but will also increase your vehicles total weight.

Mileage wouldn't be much effected but initial acceleration will suffer.

which deadener are u talking about that will result in such drastic changes in acceleration and weight???? :S

dynamite sheets which are considerably bulkier than the lambo sheets weight 500g each. 8 sheets of dynamite for all the 4 doors will only add 4kg. that kinda weight most definitely dsnt effect the performance of the car

lambo sheet bulk pack which has same size as dynamat and contains nine sheets weighs around 12 kg if i remember correctly.. to do a full car PROPERLY, u might need somewhere around 4-5 bulk packs (you can make one bulk pack work too with thoughtful application and using other materials). THAT means u will be carrying an extra passenger with you all the time. BUT since you seem like a guy who likes his comfort more than 0-100, it will be well worth to you.

Did you get this Corolla brand new??? Normally there is not so much noise from the pillars. Actually Corolla is pretty decently built and very little sound comes in from the pillars unless there is damage to the car or the door seals.

Before you start with sound deadening options, I would recommend that you get the door seals checked (the rubber that runs around the edge of the door). Does the seal leak water? is the door sitting correctly on the car frame and the seals are tightly pressed or not. A banged up door might not be seated properly (personal experience).

As per sound insulation, yes a properly sound deadened car will have a weight increase of approx 20-50 KG. But if you are looking for comfort, that weight is really not that much. Is less weight compared to a CNG kit installed.

u live in lahore, the audio markets are full of lanbo sheets. u can either go for just buying a couple of sheets and to cover all the holes in the inner metal sheet or go for a bulk pack to do a complete coverup of the inner and outer door sheets. lanbo sheets are alot cheaper than dynamite and do the job pretty well.

True, while I don't care too much about acceleration as long as it's reasonable, I'm also not a fan of putting on dead weight on to a car without good reason.

I hope the sound deadening stuff you guys have pointed out doesn't add more than the 4 - 5 kg of weight. That should be okay, since it's going to be distributed anyway, so won't hurt the suspensions in the longer run, hopefully.

I would recommend you test another corolla of the same model just to make sure. Get a demo from the dealers or on a friends car for a test ride, im sure it will help in telling you if there really is a problem with your car or its just the corolla sound insulation really sux. Then you can work on the after market sound insulation.

And btw the under 10 kg weight is really not a problem for the suspension of a corolla. these are built for pakistan and the suspension would be the last thing to worry about. (just to clarify, im not a corolla fan)

Yep that makes sense, will probably do that tomorrow. I'd be surprised if all the corollas have this problem though. Thanks, will IA report back here with findings
