Estate car's are typically cars which have much more room in the rear passenger seats. Primarily for comfort and space this means all passengers have pleasant amount of room. Compared to hatchback cars which have much less room for the passengers in the back seats. Most estates also have additional rear boot space too. New estate cars have the ability to transform the inside space to cater to their needs. Such as seats which can be folded or removed to create more space for adding additional parcel space.
Why they were called estate cars is unclear although it's probably based on the fact that estate pertains to a large area of housing, thus extra space.
A wide range of car manufacturers provide estate models.
