About XE engine, that is orginally engine for Toyota Starlet in other countries back in 80's. As Pak market wanted a cheaper model of corolla without efi 1.6l complications it servered well to install a 1.3l carburator engine.
I think corolla being a choices of masses had many diffirent models available to cater most. Only in South America, and Pakistan and maybe some more far and few countries had choice to buy 1.3l corolla in which this particular engine was instaled and chassis was known as ee-100 as engine mounts were relocated in engine bay to accomodate this 1.3l engine.
All rest 1.5l and 1.6l versions were known as ae-101 or ae-102,, rare four wheel drive models in some countries were known as ae-103.
So keeping in mind XE model fills up basic needs for corolla one should not expect powerful acceleration from it because techinically XE, GL, XE-G models are bit heavier for its engine..
I hope above clears the XE concept.
