Corolla xli 2009 performance and petrol mileage

dear pakwheelers AoA ! I bought a 2009 xli some 2 months ago, driven 47 k. My first observation was that its a relatively new car it should perform better than my previous car, a 95 stock civic and boy was i disappointed or wot. Anyways i changed the fuel filter, the oil filter, the air filter and put in petromin sahara synthetic oil, i also upgraded to denso irridium spark plugs, the result , pick up became much smoother and an average mileage increase of around 2 km/liter, the toyota guys also did some manual tuning(i dont really know wot actually they dis besides cleaning the stuff).
I just made a round trip peshwr-islmbd-nathiagali-islmbd and peshawar, here are a few things i noted
1. The mileage i get in city is almost the same on motorway.avg speed 115 kph.
2. There is alot of knoking between 110 and 120.
3. Just like my cng civic there is a loss of speed even on small steep patches of motorway.
4. Somehow other gli/xli rollas seemed to have more power, especially on way to muree etc.
5. With three people on board i could tell that its going to max out to 140 kph maximum.
6. The rpm at 110 is 3.5 and engine seems to be in overdrive mode.
So i basically wanted to ask if this was normal or my car is underperforming ? If its normal, then i am 1 disappointed rolla owner

I own xli 2010, mileage in city varies from 11-13 depending on your driving style.
Whereas mileage on motorway with 115 km /hour speed is 17 km/litre.
I have not faced any problem with my car yet. Its 18000 km driven and is as good as new.
But I must mention that I miss my previous ride ( honda city automatic 2009)

i get 12 in the city and got 14 on the motorway i.e if the onboard gadgetry showing avg mileage etc is correct. While driving on the motorway do you feel any knoking in 100 - 120 range ?

that depends on a lot of factors, foremost is the driving style, for spirited driving, yea i,d say its underpowered but for 9 to 5 daily runner its a perfetly capable car, albeit the engine noise it makes when you touch the 3.5 mark on the rpm.
So for city driving its perfectly powered ,its on the motorway where it kinda disapointed me...

is ur car tuned?is it on cng?with a cng kit on even if u use on petrol the car can knock at times due to advanced timings,second reason is low octane rating fuel being used,try adding hioctane and octane boosters

Yea i mixed some high octane in islmbd and got a marginal improvment, showed the car to toyota people today, the guy said it was fine. Howevr i feel therez sumpin missing, i mean it doesnt even spin tires when shifting from 1st to 2nd during aggressive driving, i guess i shouldve gone 4 a 06 reborn. Jz does an intake cone help ? And the volt stabiliser ? Its just that little improvment that i want.

I have a feeling that the car you bought was used on CNG. I had detailed discussion with Toyota mechanics and sales managers and they are told me that the current corolla gives problems on CNG after about 30-50k km. It is due to the specific engine head in use and can be avoided by extreme care, which no body does here. Thats the reason they modified the engine head and introduced new CNG corolla by the name of ecotec.

Secondly, there is no concept of manual tuning in corolla. Everything is controlled and set (infact reset, as there isnt any option for setting anything) by OBD. Max any mechanic can do is clean MAF sensor etc. Anyways, I suggest you get your engine examined by Toyota

ummm...no it hasnt been rUN ON cng I BOUGHT IT FROM A GUY WHO I KNOW, I GOT IT CHECKED BY A TOYOTA FOREMAN, WHO SAID ITS O.K....IS THERE ANYWAY TO CHECK ENGINE COMPRESSION , OUTPUT ETC ?

i just drove my uncles gli and yea there is a markd difference between his car and mine, its much smoother and goes to 7 rpm very smoothly but mine is like its doing towing service i.e the engine makes alot of noise and the car generally is sluggish beyond 3.5 rpm..what do u guys think ? What can be the problem and how can it be rectified ? Can it be tappet adjustment ? Can engine oil be a culprit ?

The car was previously on cng ,im pretty sure,go check ur trunk for cng kit removal marks

o.k i just took it to an electrician, supposedly the best in PEshawar, he sat in the car ,pushed the paddle down ,opened the door looked at the exhaust while pushing the accelerator and tol me to get my cars exhaust system checked cuz he thinks that its choked, went to the silencer guy, he opened the silencer took out the honeycomb wooden material in the exhaust welded it back, result : significant performance increase along with rattling noise , somehow the engine noise has also increased lately, tappets ki awaz aa rahee hai, i checked the whole trunk for cng installation signs but nada nor any signs of the switch in cabin, anyways i am now thinking of using the injector cleaners, as that is the only thing i havent done, i hope it cleans up the fuel system, will install the old fuel filters and plugs before that so they dont get fouled with the treatment, also will get an engine flush and replace the petromin with mobil 1 along with liqui moly ceratec, i hope that smoothes down the engine and if it doesnt workout i will never buy a corolla again...period.

I would look at the crank sensor face itself for sludge buildup - it can cause a delayed signal (retarded timing)

Anyways do you people think i did the right thing with getting rid of the emission control mesh in the silencer, it was all really clogged up with the red carbon deposits of petrol, and can i get an oem silencer from toyota ? the crank sensor is at the bottom of the engine right behind the main pulley. Of course the dealership would know about it.

And the wooden type honeycomb you just trashed was the cat convertor. Its a ceramic loaded with precious metals.
