the last model automatic cars had the setup you mention, they also had a nicer condenser too. While tearing apart some of these cars for the same irritating complaint of customers, I found that the heater door foam seal/gasket in the HVAC plenum box in the dashboard was either peeling off or missing.
On all cars, I wrapped the expansion valve too to give it the best fighting chance. The door gasket/foam helped out in 90% of cases, but I told customers that it wont cool down the interior like an older R12 accord (86-89) - that B@5tard could throw ice at you from the vents - yes literal ice would form on the vent blades on the dashboard.
