Renault is sending their K9K 1.5 DCi Common Rail diesel engines to India in the Dacia Logan car.
Apparently, Sulphur is a problem as it clogs up the injectors over time, but a bigger problem is water. They're sending the engines to India with decanting filters - ones with water separators. Diesel has a higher retention of water than petrol in part because it's closer in density to water than petrol.
Other than that, Sulphur is not recommended on new diesel engines as it destroys the catalytic convertor. So the Indian engines will have no cats, and the engines are recalibrated to run without the cat.

I agree about military diesel. Apparently there too, it's the water that kills off pumps. That and the fact that the drivers run their tanks empty before each fillup. So all the gunge at the bottom of the fuel tank gets sucked up into the fuel pump.

Are you sure about the 1KZ? I've a friend who has had a Surf with a 1KZ for over 250,000 kms and his car has never had a problem.
