Dead W210 220 cdi. Looking for solutions

The lower end of the engine has been opened up, and there is no noise or damage in the connecting rods or the crankshaft.
I had gotten the noise diagnosed from 2 different mechanics, both said it was from the connecting rods....
So should we open up the head to check the pistons, or can there be other reasons for such a noise.
Just recall, there was a rattle type noise at a particular rpm, not before, nor after, the noise was quite loud when the vehicle was moving.
The engine had no starting issues, no smoke issues, acceleration was alright, but that would probably be due the injectors....
The mechanic will probably open the head tomorrow, unless someone has a better suggestion, I am all ears

I said this before too, your mechanic is not qualified to work on a benz common rail engine, you maybe facing nailing issue on running or oil blowing from the turbo which also causes diesel noise.

What were your standards for noise on this engine? - dead silent? cummins clatter?

It wasn't injector nailing, because that doesn't occur at only a particular rpm. The oil through the turbo noise is something that I am unaware of, so can't say. The video doesn't capture the noise, as that occurs on a particular rpm, the video was just added so that things which can cause idling issues are completely ruled out.

It was properly loud, I could hear it from 200 meters away, sounded like a Bedford truck. It can't be a piston noise because those are heavy and the sound produced by them is I guess a bit more dense.

Would also like to add here, that I drive back from chakri, at speeds consistently between 140 and 170, and the engine gave no issues...
So I am quite puzzled

Were all lifters pumped solid?

Are those to be done manually? Because the guy said that they fill up by themselves. For that reason, I used the vehicle for about three weeks before caving into the noise

Everything has been thoroughly checked, no issues or noise anywhere...... Have started putting it back together, this time will make a video of it.

The do fill up themselves but they are wear items and can bleed off, once bled off they clatter like a a can with bolts in it.

btw - do not mix up the lifters when you remove them, they are supposed to go back into the same hole you removed them from, they are tapered and wear as companion to the cam lobes.

Thank you, will make sure of that. Once it's back in the car, if the noise persists, will start by replacing the weak injectors, and take it from there

Get a set of rebuilt injectors and the fuel rail valve and sensor too, brand new parts. Dont install scrapped items.

Looks like lifters are having air in them. Such type of lifters, require cleaning and then filling them with oil by putting them inside oil and pushing them by some needle, you'll see air bubbles coming at the start and slowly you'll see no bubbles and lifters will become hard.

I've faced this challenge in mitsubishi once & did some research on it and found out this way. After doing this the noise was gone.

So while reinstalling engine you should get this done.

tracing injectors at present, one person claims to have brand new ones, will have a look at them in a day or so, once the car is running again. Fuel rail sensor is available new, i checked that last time, not sure about the valve, will ask around

Car restarted, issue remained, then the mechanic replaced the injectors with those of another car that had come in for work, and vola! No noise.
Now for the strange bit, the mechanic says that after individual substitutions, it's either from cylinder 1 or cylinder 3, further substitutions will decide which one....
Now if everyone recalls, the star scanner identified cylinder 1 and cylinder 3 injectors to be in perfect condition so how does this work

Your scanner is outdated and probably has wrong pid data. And i told you above,, find proper bosch rebuilt injectors, not someone trying to crank the engine and checking spray.

Your mechanic is trying to school himself on your wallet, this will get very expensive. Its better to find learned and qualified people to fix your stuff.

Your scanner is outdated

its a star scanner, the best in the city, i didn't get these checked by this mechanic but by another one.

Anyways, i have located a set of brand new db injectors. Will cross check the part numbers, they are for the 611, but will check if they are for this exact model, will buy those to wrap this story up

Turns out the guy has injectors for om613, the 320cdi, now are injectors interchangeable? Because I just saw a w211 with W210 injectors in it.... If so, what other injectors can I use instead on of 611s as those aren't locally available. If they aren't interchangeable, will get refurbished ones from abroad
