Desi Hummers - Information Please

Gentlemen,
I have seen some discussion on desi Hummers that have been put together in Rawalpindi or somewhere. Would really appeciate any information, pics and views on how these machines have been put together. A friend of mine has asked me to look into the feasibility (read craziness) of converting an old Nissan Safari into a Hummer.... he obviously has something like this in mind:

Would appreciate if anyone can share information on these desi marvels including engine, body, suspension, size and shape (H1, H2, H3?), ride quality etc. Contacts of owners would also be of great help.

Here's a link to a Aussie Site, they use a standard safari as a donor vehicle. I came to find this a long while ago. The sites more interesting now.

I have seen one hummer body being made in gawalmandi, just after corssing the bridge on left hand side. apparently the guy had built one already and its in karachi getting painted. i saw it from a distance. not sure of anything else, looked like a hummer, pretty small though. not sure about the donor vehicle. the same denter was also working on a green willys

After Sherwan wonderful rhino pointer and given our inroads into Gawalmandi....the only real question now actually is the cost The RhinoBuggy apparently attempts to replicate the H1 body on a Nissan Patrol chassis and does quite an amazing job given that its always gonna be running a deficit of about 10-12 inches in body width.

Has your friend considered buying just the body from Rhino Buggies? You can have it assembled over here. For 20k a high quality painted body plus all the accessories is a bargain. I am not sure what the duty would be though. If done here locally on a safari i think the cost roughly be the same.

@sherwan: I think that the body would have to be locally fabbed as $20K+duty is a lotta dough for any panga project. It would be nice to able to spend some time with an original H1 around town to copy the whole thing first hand.

The other thing is that there is actually a 20 inch width difference between the H1 and the Nissan Patrol bodies and around 15inches on the wheelbase. After some initial searching, I believe that a Dodge M880 Power Wagon Pak Army auction chasis is better suited for this conversion with 6inches width deficit and around 4 inches on the wheelbase.

Also messing up a 1990 Nissan Patrol (which is still worth a few lakhs at least) does not seem all that fair if we can get the M880 chasis for a few thousand rupees.

Anyways lets see how things go, but to do this right will be one hell of an undertaking

I agree with that. Ruining a nice old Safari is not right. Ironic aint it coming out of my mouth.
If you are willing to sniff around the Pak-Afghan border, you might be able to find somehow who has Humvees for sale. :P:D:D

By the way if you come across a chassis which is being sold for a few a thousand rupees do let me know too. I have a project in mind too.

Are you referring to the cutting or the drowning of your Safari?

If former, I know people have different views on that, but I liked that thread and don't have any issues with cutting up wagons into daalas, specially when the end products looks as decent as yours! Hell, I think the people who criticise your cut-up would actually faint if they ever see what people in the US do to perfectly new Wranglers to fit bigger tires and wheelbase strecthes etc...
