for rebuild discuss labor charges after engine is off the bay and disassembled source all parts with the mechanic by yourself. other member is right if you give choice to mechanic he will use parts from scrap with no shame and charge premium
steps for rebuild is:
take off engine from vehicle
disassemble it
check for any lekage of welch plugs mark those
check for water pump condition - clean or replace ( at engine assembly )
check for oil pick up strainer - clean or replace ( while assembling engine )
the block & head goes to machine shop they will provide you list of items
the pump & nozzles go to pump shop for test calibiration and adjustment / replacment of parts.
the thermostat valve shall be oem new and placed into system at assembling of engine
the parts list provided by machine shop , you spare your day and visit shops to source maximum oem new or replacments
once engine & head is off the machine shop wash it clean with residue and apply coat of silicon oil to avoid rust during assembly process
