For the temperature readings, does the ecu of 1hdfte relies on the same water temp sensor located near the oil filter or are there two different sensors for guage cluster and the ecu ?
And one more thing.
The timing and injected volume is controlled by the ecu on these (which is long way of saying EFI) so if a engine like this has been tuned by unichip or some other tuner, is it possible that the timing would have been messed up by him ? I know the AFR readings will be changed for sure but is it necessary to change the timing to gain more power ? Talking about the afr i guess 20:1 is the boundary line on a turbodiesel. Anything below this threshold would result in extremely high egts. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There is no set afr on a diesel engine as its unthrottled. More accelerator means more rich.
We have to keep this in sensible range to prevent meltdown.
First step towards sensible range and correct timing is to make sure the injectors are perfectly adjusted on both stages, wrong break pressure causes timing havoc on the engine.

The single wire one is on other side of engine, that drives the temperature gauge. The ecu one is under intake manifold.
