difference between horsepower and cc.. ok jokes aside, lets try to solve it.. Horsepower is defined as work done over time. The exact definition of one horsepower is 33,000 lb.ft./minute. if you were to lift 33,000 pounds one foot over a period of one minute, you would have been working at the rate of one horsepower and now ..symbol cc stands for cubic centimeter. hence the conclusion is there is no way one can measure the difference.. its like talking about apples and oranges.,, these are two diffirent types of measures.

well...you can compare the two since they are somewhat related....meaning....one affects the other but not vice versa.

cc is the volume that the cylinders can hold for combustion which thereafter determines the output that is measured in hp. so bigger the cc capacity...higher the hp eventually.

power= work done / time

another unit of power is horse power

relation btw them is 1 HP= 746 watts

If you want to know the horsepower of an engine, you connect the engine to a dynamometer. A dynamometer exrerts load on the engine and measures the amount of power that the engine can produce against that load.

cc on the other hand refers to the volume of the engine cylinders in which combustion of fuel takes place

the more is the fuel capacity of cylinders i-e the more is the combustion in cylinders which produces greater power and hence more horse power ,,,,,,,but there are other parameters to be kept into consideration,,,,,,,

this is why sometimes a car with higher cc can have a lower horse power,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just as the case of civic exi and optra,,,,,,,,,,exi 1500cc ,,hp= 110,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,while optra 1600cc and hp=107

now can anybody tell me what is the work done in moving a bucket of water from one point in a circle back to the same point thus completing one cycle,,,????

its apples and oranges,,, cant mix them.. optra being 1600cc. produces 107hp. you can either fiddle with gain in hp by modfying it,, or change the piston size to gain cc and hp. as long the bigger piston doesnt break the block:)

The story goes ... Watt was working with ponies lifting coal at a coal mine, and he wanted a way to talk about the power available from one of these animals. He found that on average a mine pony could do 22,000 foot-pounds of work in a minute. He then increasd tht nmber by 50 percent and pegged the measurement of horsepower at 33,000 foot-pounds of work in one minute. It is that arbitrary unit of measure that has made its way down through the centuries and now appears on your car......as lik your chain saw
What horsepower means is this in Watt's judgement, one horse can do 33,000 foot-pounds of work every minut A horse exerting 1 horsepower can raise 330 pounds of water 100 feet in a minute, or 33 pounds of water 1,000 feet in one minute from well, or 1,000 pounds 33 feet in one minute. You can make up whatever combination of feet and pounds you like. As long as the product is 33,000 foot-pounds in one minute, you have a horsepower. You can probably imagine that you would not want to load 33,000 pounds of water in the tank and ask the horse to move it 1 foot in a minute because the horse couldn't budge that big a load. You can probably also imagine that you would not want to put 1 pound of water in the tank and ask the horse to run 33,000 feet in one minute, since that translates into 375 miles per hour and horses can't run that fast. However, if you have read How a Block and Tackle Works, you know that with a block and tackle you can easily trade perceived weight for distance using an arrangement of pulleys. So you could create a block and tackle system that puts a comfortable amount of weight on the horse at a comfortable speed no matter how much weight is actually in the tank or water bag...!
horsepower is equivalent to 746 watts. So if you took a 1-horsepower horse and put it on a treadmill, it could operate a generator producing a continuous 746 watts.
1 horsepower (over the course of an hour) is equivalent to 2,545 BTU (British thermal units). If you took that 746 watts and ran it through an electric heater for an hour, it would produce 2,545 BTU (where a BTU is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 degree Fareheit.........
One BTU is equal to 1,055 joules, or 252 gram-calories or 0.252 food Calories. Presumably, a horse producing 1 horsepower would burn 641 Calories in one hour if it were 100-percent efficient.

How Horsepower Works?
How many horses ya got under the hood, bro? That’s a typical question among car enthusiasts at the tracks. And the answer is quite creative in most of the cases. But how do you define horsepower? Ask a car enthusiast and most of the time you'll get a blank look, a shrug of the shoulders and maybe a guess along the lines of "What a horse can do! That answer begs the question: What horse? A thoroughbred race horse that can carry the small weight of a jockey with a lot of speed, or a working horse that can pull heavy loads albeit slowly? Obviously there is a more precise answer. Car manufacturers, despite their reputation for being creative regarding the horsepower ratings of their products for marketing reasons, require a more stable definition. But that’s not the car manufacturers only, it includes auto enthusiasts who put blood and bucks to gain the horsepower and consumer who buy cars in respect of their rubber burning ability determined by the mighty horsepower or what we call in our part of the world as “Ghoray”.
But before going further, let me take you into the time when Mr. James Watt, somewhere in between of 18th century and 19th century, the same guy who invented the steam engine and the man whose name has been immortalized by the definition of Watt as a unit of power. To help sell his steam engines, Watt needed a way of rating their capabilities. The engines were replacing horses, the usual source of industrial power of the day. The typical horse, attached to a mill that grinded corn or cut wood, walked a 24 foot diameter circle. Watt calculated that the horse pulled with a force of 180 pounds, although how he came up with the figure is not known. Watt observed that a horse typically made 144 trips around the circle in an hour, or about 2.4 per minute. This meant that the horse traveled at a speed of 180.96 feet per minute. Watt rounded off the speed to 181 feet per minute and multiplied that by the 180 pounds of force the horse pulled (181 x 180) and came up with 32,580 ft.-lbs./minute. That was rounded off to 33,000 ft.-lbs./minute, the figure we use today. As per my physics book, Horsepower is defined as work done over time. Put it another way, if you were to lift 33,000 pounds one foot over a period of one minute, you would have been working at the rate of one horsepower. In this case, you'd have expended one horsepower-minute of energy.
Europeans, Japanese and majority of Auto Enthusiasts around the world uses the term bhp, in order to indicate the power of a motor which is actually the measure of an engine's horsepower without the loss in power caused by the gearbox, generator, differential, water pump and other auxiliaries. The actual horsepower delivered to the driving wheels is less. So in order to check out how much power is actually being delivered to the wheels, we use the term “whp” i.e. wheel horsepower. And to be more precise terms such as rwhp (rear wheel horsepower), awhp (all wheel horsepower) and fwhp(front wheel horsepower) are used for tuning and measuring a car’s capabilities to net figures.
In the United States, the term "bhp" fell into disuse after the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommended manufacturers use hp (SAE) to indicate the net power of the engine, given that particular car's complete engine installation. It measures engine power at the flywheel, not counting drivetrain losses. The decision was primarily due to the horsepower competition with euro manufacturers and famous horsepower battle with insurance companies. As Detroit guys use to measure their engines without even installing the water pump and alternators resulting in a lager horsepower motors which were a high risk for insurance companies.
That’s how the 1001 ghoray of Buggati Veyron and 49 bhp’s of local assembeled economy hatchbacks works in real life and on dynometers which are used to measure the horsepowers of ricers to an utmost extent.
An interesting fact though that between 1922 and 1947, the Royal Automobile Club used a horsepower rating that was the basis for an automobile tax. Using that dubious method, what we know of as a 385 horsepower motor found in the Z06 Corvette would be rated at only 48.67 hp.
