i have excel 93 n its fan is also direct as old cars have usually, after reading this whole thread i m thinking to make it auto but question is that whether i should get same stuff as of suzuki(may be of khyber/alto) as they r normal electrical items.
all of the time(normally), my cars needle remains on zero line but i had seen many cars which needles remain on center at normal level/position. why is that???

The only disadvantage is that thermostat valves do get faulty without showing any pre signs . Direct connection in that case is somewhat safe .

I think your sensor is faulty or something else is wrong, (like compression timing) - on a old Honda civic the fan will kick on at 45% gauge rise - I would also replace the Tstat - it becomes sticky

I have suzuki liana 2006, when i first start my vehicle in morning its temprature needle remain on 0 but after some traveling in city it reaches to half of the position. but when i use to travel on long route on highway and dont have intturption to use break , then after some time temprature needle again drop down to almost on 10 in summer and on 0 in winter. is this normal or malfunctioning with engine problem. plz give your expert opinion. thanks

Your thermostat valve is stuck in open position, because of which it is not closing when required. Replace it and your problem will be solved.

meri gari ki mileage is waqt 197k hai aur 189 pe engine bana tha (overhaul)
i have got 1 nali radiator.. inshallah i will go 4 a double nali wala... magar woh new kaheen se mil jae ga... i cannot trust the kabli ones caz this is pakistan u know.
after installing the radiator i will go for installing the thermo...
waise on long routes the car rarely overheats and the prob is in city only...

also for ur info.. i have done the following measures to keep my car not overheat...
1. never switch on interior fan at 3 or 4 speed..
always 2 in the noon and at 1 in the night.
this helps in maintaining good temp. caz the compressor responds to it. at 1speed it trips frequently.

2. radiator service every month even its working fine or not.

3. avoid noon driving at extreme hot temp outside.

but yesterday i had a chat with my uncle(mamooon)
he strongly apposed the idea of the thermo valve.
he said it is only needed in the countries where temp is very low.
in our countries the temp is mild all the times so it doesnt make any difference.
btw he is an automobile engineer with 30yr expe...

secondly he told me ke baleno and santro mein temp sensor is placed at the block of the engine not on the head.
so if the water level decreases in the car the temp remains same in the gauge since the sensor is taking readings from the block of the engine (which has got full water.)but at the other hand the water level is decreasing in the head thus, overheating the car and blowing the gasket.
so to avoid this, he said, check the water daily and fill it with coolant.

AOA, I liked all the discussion above and just I want to add my view, as far as radiator electric cooling fan and thermostat valve is concerned so it is therefore for its function and the cars in pakistan are designed for environmental conditions, I never saw in Dubai and Qatar that people bypass any thing in the engine cooling system and those countries are bitter hot than pakistan, so just keep an eye on temp., gauge in the meter cluster of your car and time to time check water level in the radiator and try to change coolent/antifreez before summer start, if the weather is hot or we are driving in city with AC on so the thermostate valve will automatically remain open and circulation will be there and its fail state is struck "open" as per my knowledge,so do not worry just keep an eye on temp gauge especially when driving in the city or being caught in traffic jam.

excellent input - more light on the ustaad shaagird syndrome we have like a plague in Pakistan, rather than applying logic we resort to "shaksiyat parasti" if you want to place it in urdu; examplified by removing the Tstat, draining all coolant, filling with river/well water, bridging the fans and calling it a day, When asked to apply some sort of common working logic, it will be seen as "kufr" and "paagalpan" because obviously the chap owning the 6x'6' cabin with worn out tools is far more intelligent and superior than the whole team of people who actually made the vehicle.

thanks to all brother who have put their knowledge and experiences here. It got me convinced to install thermostat valve and fan switch to my car (Toyota Corolla AE80 Model 1984).

So far i have got a 82 degree thermostat installed in my car, and car is behaving wonderfully in winters. All rattling is gone, idle is smooth all the way, and I feel a little performance and fuel consumption is better.

Question is where to install the radiator fan switch, as some previous owner have made alterations to the system. I can figure it out by now where to get the switch installed. If any one can post a picture will a great favor.

your cars thermofan switch is on the engine, and would be 1 wire, it works in opposite way switching a "reversed relay" meaning that when the circuit is complete the relay is off and when the circuit switches off the relay is ON. Its how nearly all toyota electric cooling fans are wired.

But the socket for radiator fan is with two wires, and if connect these two wires, fan goes OFF. Thereare two temperature switches, one on the thermostat housing and flange, and other in head near waterbody. The manual say these two are single wire gauges, and fan switch is a two wired thing.
BTW, she has a 2A engine (with 8 valves)
