Disc brake for vw beetle

i would like to request all of pakwheel user to suggest which vehicle's disc can be installed in my 1969 beetle.

Also inform me if anyone got converted his beetle to EFI system? if yes how?

I can't believe the VW guys missed this.

@munawar69, it is recommended that if you have a stock engine, stick with the stock drum brakes. If they are setup right, they perform well and are enough for the car.

If you really want to go for disc brakes, the best option would be to find a set from a VW Variant at Shershah. You can also ask the VW-only mechanics as they might have some or might know of someone who has them.

You can also try sourcing from other cities.

About EFI...well on a Bug, EFI would be setup like any other car. You would need the basic components like injectors, sensors, fuel pump, throttle body etc.. But the main thing, and the most difficult to get, is the ECU, or the 'brains' of the system.

ECUs from other cars might not work. If you are interested, then have a look at MegaSquirt. This is a programmable ECU which can work for pretty much any setup. It comes as a DIY kit and is relatively cheaper than other programmable ECUs. Check it out at megasquirt.org

The stock brakes on the Beetle are more than enough ...... if you are keeping it stock. I've driven mine on the stock setup for over 30 years now (well ....... not the last ... mmm ..... 5 years. Its parked). Never had any problem stopping the car for any rate of speed. (Please don't ask what speeds it can go to. Properly tuned, I can easily go beyond the legal speed limit in Pak).

I don't know where you are located. If you happen to be in Islamabad/Rawalpindi area, go straight to Muqeem. He converted his beetle to disc brakes (because he upgraded his engine to a bigger one then stock). He'll have all the information you'll need as well as the sources to get them for you or to guide you to them so you can source them yourself.

If you have the money, then may I suggest get a new, complete drum setup (for all 4 corners) and install that in your car instead of going for disc brakes.

Install a seat-belt setup in your car while you are at it.

Seat belts save lives. I'm living proof !!!

I had a Beetle at that age but wasn't as knowledgeable about it as most of the people. So anytime I find some one younger then me having more knowledge about VWs ..... I get envious.

@romano ........ yeah. I've driven my beetle for 30 years and I'm aged 37. Started driving at 6, in an FJ-40 when I couldn't even look out of the windscreen properly. Had a VW Type 2, 1979 as well. At the time I couldn't reach the paddles on the floor so had to stand up to depress the clutch fully so that I could shift into higher gears. Don't ask me how I managed to push the brakes on that thing!

I'm not bragging ... just sharing how stupid I was.

Traffic in the outskirts of Peshawar (on Shami road opposite the polo ground) was non-existent. And no, thats not a justification of my acts.
