Another reason why people lose muscle is due to training/exercising on an empty stomach, early morning.
The reason being muscle is much easily breakable than fat when there is no food in the stomach.
However when one exercises anytime after 4pm the dangers of muscle loss for energy replenishment are greatly reduced. The reason being, the food that you have been putting in your stomach since morning is in a transitional phase I.e. giving you energy, filling up your fat cells and then converting it into a congealed mass. Now when you exercise later in the day your body extracts energy from that food in your gut and from the fat cells. Extracting energy from the fat cells requires a bit of hard work in the form of long duration cardio. Muscle on the other hand grows from short, intense workouts and consumption of protein. Fat reduction and muscle building exercises are totally opposite to each other.
