If i am planning on a long journey i make sure i have plenty of sleep before departure and everything works smooth..

This is the best and most suitable approach. I know most if us remain awake till late if we are planning a trip in the morning , OR start a journey late in the evening after a hectic day and then start dozing on the wheel.

I fell asleep yesterday and almost hit the road divider on Motorway at 100km/h.
Basically, driver was supposed to come with us, he backed out last minute. Last resort was to call a friend who doesn't have any driving experience. His job was just to sit with me and make sure I am awake.

Left Islamabad, on the way back to Faisalabad. Before Kallar Kahar I think, I dozed off and my friend knew that I would fall asleep, he could tell from my actions. He started staring at the mountains and bam, I heard something very very loud and woke up, looked up in mirror, Alhamdulillah no car behind me. Went to service lane and took a deep breath.

So; what happened? I have a habit of holding steering with right hand- So car probably went to the right, rather than the left(There's always a ditch on left side on Motorway)

My rims hit the road divider and that is dangerous. Car can climb up the road divider and eventually flip over or tire could hit the metal pieces and burst.(Pictures will explain).

So, please please drive carefully, take extra rest. I would've slept after dropping Mom off if I was alone, but she insisted on taking someone with me.

Just check out the pictures of my rims, very close to the actual tire!

Its always good to have someone with you coz when you're talking to someone there's less chance of dozing off!

Thanks for the well wishes:), We were talking for a bit, I started playing music with some sick beats, pushed the car seat back, lowered the steering wheel, Ac on in the summer heat and I was in a very comfortable position... Fell asleep.

i had this experience but as i always drive on highway eith my dady so he used to talk with me whole jurney when i first time drive car on highway in 2011 it was night i was very tired i was feeling that i would sleep un next one min if i dont stop the car but as i say i was with my father he starts talking with me and journey get over safely By the grace of ALMIGHTY ALLAH.

well when you make yourself in too much comfortable position. you area calling for sleep. Its better to keep the window little open winter or summer for fresh air to come inside. Also when you are driving alone as soon as you feel you will fall asleep. Just STOP and have a 15 minutes walk in a service area. I know you don't have something much more urgent than your life..
Also staying awake overnight (like you normally do) and then traveling in the morning is not good either. you should be well rested before you start driving. And this commute can be a 10 minutes of 10 hours long.. you should take good rest before starting

I don't recall if we have but our motorway need rumble strips on each edge of the road.. effective way to alert the driver.. Its very loud and shakes the vehicle.

I know i ------ up:( InshAllah next time, either tell driver 3-4 days ahead and make sure he comes or sleep allllllll night before. If I was alone, I would've taken rest, but friend was Beaching that he had to get home

If our motorway had Rumble strips- I would've woken up. I am a light sleeper haha

This is MUST needed... NHA just need a pavement milling machine and start from one side on the shoulder.

The driver fell asleep while driving on Motorway. Everyone were safe. Remember outcome can be much diuffrent and serious. Please be well rested before you take on the driving seat.

Very good to hear that you realize and sharing with us. At 60 kmph.. Every second you are crossing around 17 meters.. 4 second will cover about 70 meters and 70 meters is About 230 feet. This is alot of distance blindfolded. Just for comparative relationship.. The street poles are somewhat 75 to 100 feet apart. Now next time when you drive.. just check how much you covered before slapping yourself... Drive safe. It's better to get late.. Stop and relax before jumping in car again..

My timings for office are quite early i.e 7 am - 3 pm. So a few days back I left the office a bit late around 5 pm and was feeling sleepy. I try to do hypermiling and maintain constant speed i.e I drive on the Lahore Canal Road from Dharampura Underpass to Jinnah Underpass at a constant 60 km/h with AC on. The atmosphere around me got too cozy and I think I slept for around 3-4 seconds while driving. After 3-4 seconds when I got my senses back, I slapped myself very hard on the face (Don't remember why, but did it involuntarily :P), turned off the AC, opened the windows. That slap kept me awake for the entire journey that was left
