For your kind information, both cars have the same engine.
Now don't go mad at me but this is the truth.
Toyota haven't changed the engines in new XLI, GLI, 2.0D or 2.0D saloon.
It has only fitted a VVTI system on top of the engines.
The VVTI addition will not give huge performance gains. It will only give better fuel management and smoother operation of the engine. VVTI is not a "performance" upgrade.
You can check that out at the specifications page for corolla at Toyota Indus website.
If you have specifications for previous gen. XLI, you will notice both cars have same engine, hence producing same horsepower and torque.
The old one is lighter than the new one. That's why it's winning. Similar engines but old one lighter, give better acceleration and better milage too.
So new Rolla aexcept for Altis is just like a second hand mobile with new body.
