Change pcv valve pipe and gromet as well. Rubber degenerates over the time.

first, let us kow ur gear shifting issue resolved or not?
2nd , u need to promise that you will not try to top up oil before oil change is due.
3rd, just shift to 10W-40, which is not very thin, and observe fuel economy and performance.

if u find any issues, u can simple shift back to 20w-50.

now wait till oil change and then report back!!

I don't know why you're pushing him towards a thinner oil. It is 3-4cst thinner then his current oil. If 20w50 is reducing then engine will reduce 10w40 more. 5w50 is the only good option he can go for. Cheapest one is toyota taglon.
@Thinking here recommended that to various cars which were reducing oil and all of them are working fine now.

My 2016 1.8 altis cvti is at 104000kms today. Zero oil reduction. I'm damn sure that problem is either leakage from somewhere or it is a pcv valve/pcv valve gromet.

Ur car has different engine which is 1zrfe..
The engine with old altis is 1zzfe which has known oil reduction behavior...and it is also documented in manual clearly that 1ltr oil resuction is exp3cted over 5k milage...
So we r talking abt two different things cannot be comapred...

Firstly, my car got 2zrfe. Secondly, here is listed oil consumption for that engine. There is no engine in world which does not consume oil. All engine consume oils more or less. Even if engine is new it consumes oil but that quantity is minute.

We are not talking about 2 differet things. ZR series engines are successor to ZZ series engines.

Paray ga farq bhai. Fix this up, get pcv valve and its gromet checked. Rubber degenerates over the time.
Switch to 5w50 toyota taglon only under given circumstances. @Thinking sir here got vitz which was consuming oil. It didn't consume oil since the day he switched onto taglon 5w50; Moreover, its a fullysynthetic so you can drive it easily upto 5k kms.

Do this please and you will be free from listed issues.

Yaar I don't know who are these people who said that thin oils makes humongous difference in fuel economy?
My car was driven for like 35k kms on Mobil 1 5w50. It used to give 13km/l within city and now it gives 13.5km/l within city on amsoil 5w30. On motorway at 120km/h (cruise on) the fuel economy remained the same 15.5-16.5km/l. My car even gave 17.2km/l on motorway at same speed on mobil 1 5w50. It does effect, but maximum recorded difference in my experience was just 0.5km/l at max.
Furthermore, wheel alignment, wheel balance and tyres rolling resistance affects fuel economy big big time.

Switching to thicker oil to reduce oil consumption wud do more harm than gud. Oil wont be able to provide lubrication in tight clearance places,ultimately ruining engine. 10w30 from caltex is a good bet since they have anti counterfeiting code aswell.
i had used 10w30 through out till 265,000km for my civic which was brought zero meter and it didnt reduce oil.

1zr or 2zr, both are built on same technology buy different capacity, and off course with known problems fixed...so scenario is different with that and cannot be applied with retrospect.

its as per design and written in corolla manual. reducing 1L oil/1000 KM is normal and no issue with the engine.

depends upon driving habits and may be fake oil pack. still oil reduction in modern engines is as per design and not an issue.

it was actually loosing power and knocking extensively on 5w-20 fully synthetic. switched to taglon and car runs quite a lot better.
