Engine Oil For Indus Corolla 1.6 Gli

I hope everyone is doing great. I have a small query regarding the engine oil to be used in my car. It is a 1996 Corolla 1.6 Gli. The previous owner (who is a good friend) changed its piston rings and replaced its head with a 5-afe one only three months. He had been using Havoline with Deposit Shield (20W-50).
Now my queries are.

1. Should I continue using the same oil. There is no oil consumption experienced, but my gut feeling is that it is too thick. On the other hand, I also feel that using synthetic grade oil would not be good choice considering it has old technology. Comments would be welcome.

2. How much oil should be poured in alongwith new filter. Some people say 3.5 ltr while others say only 3.0.

Petromin Ultra 7. 20-50w.
If above not available try Zic Hiflo
You can also try Caltex formula but that is 10w-30 so if the engine is not 100% it might decrease oil or develop leakage around the seals.

Buy 4 L and check how much it takes. must be around 3.5L

But 5/30 or 10/40 oils may produce an extra noise in the engine and make it more heat up because these are bit thinner.
Synthetic oil is not recommended because engine is already ~18 years old.

ZIC hi-flow 20/50 is a good oil. But unluckily due to its high consumption here in pak. market, its being re-packed here. And hence quality cannot be trusted well.

Do you know the company LEEPON (malaysian company who produce the air & oil filters)? This company has started collaboration with a korean oil producing company and they have just introduced couple of oils according to the mind set of pak. people.
Use their oil 20/50. I bet you will find it better than ZIC hiflow.

Or if you can find PTT Performa oil, then its among my favourites. Because oil itself posses some extra qualities to keep the engine's voice down.

Try these oils and enjoy.

Incase if still not satisfied with them, then try 20/60. Its even thicker than 20/50 and will keep your engine as cool as ice.

But never forget to change the oil n air filter with every oil change.

hope you have my suggestion about engine oil as above.

Well the old cars usually reduces oil.
So its better to buy 4L pack, pour 3 or 3.25 liter and check the level with dipstick.
Keep the balance with you and keep checking the oil gauge every 3/4 days time. You can use the stock (left over) when or if necessary.

First of all you are most welcome :). Secondly I think one shouldn't obsess about oil selection too much. My take on this is just go by the Toyota's recommendations i.e. use the recommended oil viscosity. Toyota makes following engine oil variants for Pakistan
5w30, 10w30 and 20w50 so as long as you choose from these variants and the oil is synthetic you are good to go, you can't go wrong.
The synthetics offer the only truly significant differences, due to their superior high temperature oxidation resistance, high film strength, very low tendancy to form deposits, stable viscosity base, and low temperature flow characteristics. Synthetics are superior lubricants compared to traditional petroleum oils. You will have to decide if their high cost is justifed in your application.

Who recommended you 15w40? Nothing would go terribly wrong even if you are using it but make sure it's synthetic. I haven't found a single user manual recommending 15w40 for any Toyota engine.
