Every vehicle has its own problems as an owner of a LJ 71 (3 door Prado) 1990, these cars are meant to be fixed by the owners themselves if you are a little handy with some technical know how, there are lot of resources out there to help you in some cases step by step on how to fix issues and that is the real satisfaction when you fix and it runs (what is the fun is getting it fixed by mechanics and there are out there to rob you anyways) but at some point not all repairs can be done @ home.
There are 11 computers on my BMW if it does not start I have no clue on what to do apart from making the call to the Stealer but when my LC had issues starting opened the hood tinkered around a bit and discovered that the battery terminal was loose shoved some screws in and voila it started so that it where all the fun is and apart from that the 4x4 that is good fun too (good toys for older boys 
)
But any car require regular maintenance just keep an eye on the "tel paani" and you should be fine
it is a good step in the right direction go for it , the LC has good re sale parts are available and easy to fix, I was thinking of getting a 3 door pajero or a 3 door nissan patrol but still searching ......................
