Extra Burst of Power with Side Gapped Spark Plugs

Hi !

I have tried cold air intake as shown in my last DIY post and have found that it has improved not only cars power, pickup and torque but also the gas mileage from 10 kmpl (petrol) to 14-15 kmpl in city mileage and over 22 kmpl highway mileage.

Next mod I tried was side gapping my plugs. They are normalngs Champion RC8YC plugs side gapped by me using a small conical file.

The gap is set at factory setting using a DIY plug gap setting tool made from a filed simple washer.

This mod has stabilised my cars idling rpm rock solid and car seems to have got a fresh burst of power and torque after this mod.

side gapping was explained on this forum by racerf1 long time back.. i have it in my car and i know many other pwers who have done the same diy in their own cars.. but please post some clear pictures.

The result I got is as follows :

1. More responsive engine

2. More smooth pick up

3. Immediate throttle response

4. More power and faster car

5. Engine always ready to prowl on slight accelerator pedal push

6. Stabilised rock steady idling RPM - ealier I always had the irregular idling rpm problem.

7. Lesser emissions as tested by the emmission certifying guys on my pump. Less CO, NOx & unburnt Hydrocarbons.

I will take them out and check the condition soon and post my observations.

I am attaching few more pix detailing the tools I have used to side gap my stock plugs.

The key performance gapping is to gap them slightly more than factory set up gap for the stock plugs. Bigger gap gives longer spark to ingite the air fuel mixture better resultiing in more complete combustion and hence delivers more power in the power stroke.

However too much gap may result in plug not firing at all and misfiring at low engine RPM, in case ypu experience any misfire just tap the spark plug gap to be a bit lesser gap and you are there.

I have used BOSCH SUPER 4 also but find side gapping more powerful and zippier than any other fancy plugs.

the result u r getting in pick etc is NOT bcz u cut / foil and make it a little sideways , tht is bcz you have adjusted the gap and same results cud get by simply increasing the gap , no need to foil and make it on sides. more over u can also buy a 4 pin plug for this reason , i have tried tht 4 pin or even 2 pin plug and there is no difference between 2 , 4 or single pin plugs in performance bcz when there is a huge pressure built in the chamber and the fuel is injected there is a boom always , no matter where we light the flame to burn

cut by filing the unwanted metal ground electrode with a small sharp file shown in the picture

have done that 3 months ago.used grinder for cutting the element.and for correct gapping used the gapping guage.

under load or at HI RPM ?

under load at low rpm, i think its due to extra gap, as i changed over to bosch super 4 the misfire went away, i think will have to get a gapper tool to regap the side gapped correctly to use them on the car

By doing this DIY, you actually reduce HC (Hydro-Carbon) exhaust from your car, making your car average more economical.
Today, I have checked my car's HC on computer, too much minimized than before.
