The team of the Scuderia Ferrari played one of the biggest roles at the opening ceremony of the XXth Olympic Winter Games held at the Northern Italian metropolis of Torino also being the home town of the FIAT carmaker group. Starting after a symbolic pit stop Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer left the stage in the middle of the Olympic Stadium to do half a lap in it finished by spectacular donuts creating a lot of smoke coming from the tyres. Doing so he was watched by 42 statesmen from all over the world including Norways King Harald, German Federal President Horst Koehler, America
first lady Laura Bush, the wife of the British Prime Minister Cherie Blair and, of course, by the President of Italy Champi opening the games officially. FIAT and Ferrari president Dr Luca di Montezemolo had joined the crowd of 32 000 sitting on the grandstands of the stadium, while over two billion people were watching the ceremony at their television screens.
