First Time Buying SUV, plz respond

salam to all friends.
i ve already create topics and thankful to pakwheels community, they helped my v much.
this time m in a big confusion, i want to buy Surf (96-02) within budget of 17 lacs. i ve visited several showrooms n also from ads i ve checked 3 to 4 vehicles.
when i check a surf 3.4 v6, the owner says "POWERFUL ENGINE HA, ZIADA LOAD NHI PERTA JISKI WJA SAY FUEL AVERAGE IS 10+ ON HIGHWAY"
when i check a 2.7 the owner says "3.4 TOU 6 CYLENDER HA, BARA ENGINE HA, HIGHWAY PR BHI 5,6 KM/L SAY ZIADA FUEL AVERAGE NHI HA"
Bros m totaly fucked, SO plz help me that which version i should buy???(regarding best fuel average)

The 3.4 is actually a tad bit better than 2.7

I haven't kept them, what I had was a 2006 TXL Prado 2.7 and some of my friends who had 3.4 after they had already kept a 2.7 did claim that 3.4 has better consumption than a 2.7 reason being lesser load on the engine and this concept is reasonably true to quite an extent.

The body weight needs to be proportionate to the engine power, or the engine will have to work extra. Take the example of Corolla on a smaller scale: a 1.3 Auto is a fuel guzzler compared to 1.6 Auto. If you drive a slightly bigger engine peacefully it takes less load while the underpowered one is working overtime. Smaller engines are more economical in idling when the car is not moving and engine is started.

Search a YouTube video "Prius vs BMW Topgear" the Prius had a full pedal to metal thrashing run and all the BMW had to do was keep up, as a result at the end of this experiment the Prius consumed more fuel than the BMW. The BMW was an M3

So it depends on driving style as well and not just the engine displacement.

And most of all, like some members said, you need to take this thought of 2.7 vs 3.4 away when buying an SUV like this

I have surf 3.4 1999. The best milage i get on highway is 8.8 wiyh 275 tyres and 28 tyre pressure and extremly loght foot. In city on average i get 6.5. No idea about 2.7 but same surf in 1kz used to give 8 to 9 on average in city.

If maintained well these engines dont require much maintenance apart from oil plugs and timing belt. Suspension parts are easily available for surf new and used. Keeping this similar to keeping a corolla in my experiance. Though it may vary due to condition of your suv. Il advise to get a better condition one even if you have to buy an older model

For better highway mileage and enjoying northern areas try to find a decent well maintained Surf with 1KZ-TE.

I am used to get 7.75-8 km/l in city with full time AC on and its my daily runner.

I came back from Multan yesterday, I kept my speed around 80-90 km/h from Lahore to Multan and back on GT road and believe me it returned 10.85 km/l al hamd o lillah, tyre pressure was 30 psi all around.

And guess what I have reached the destination within the same time when i drive around 100-110 km/h because this time I have avoided excessive braking using some hypermiling techniques.

I believe in preventive maintenance and I have changed all oils (gear, transfer box, front rear diff) all filters regularly (air filter every 3rd oil change and fuel filter every 4th oil change) replaced front shocks, suspension bushes, gear mounting, new maxxis AT tyres, replaced first time its timing belt and bearing etc.

Mine has done 141000 kms original but in order to find this beast I spent almost an year but result is superb al hamd o lillah.

If I were you, I would get a 4.5 L (Land Cruiser) and put it on Bio D and enjoy life......... Remember you only live once

the millage u r telling, i ve heard about 2.7, no difference...
light foot mean 80-90 km/h or 100-110 km/hr???

i like lc 80 series, multi valve diesel engine, listened 10 + milleage.... bt dnt like diesel engines...
& petrol 4.5 will not affoardable with milleage of 4-5 km/l (highway)

Its other way around dear, as amnesty vehicles are 95% either having 3RZFE 2700cc underpowered petrol engine or the fuel thirsty 5VZFE 3400cc engine.

Whereas the regular imported surf were 95% diesel.

If you like to have petrol SUV than increase your budget to 3.5m+ and try to find a 2005 Surf with 2TRFE 2700cc engine like the one fortuner has plus it has a 5 speed auto that gives similar mileage to mine.

"diesel vehicle required extra maintenance expense" + "weekly tour to workshops" what this terms mean???
every vehicle require a general checkup, plugs, tunning, lubricants etc than what is the major reason that diesel vehicles are different???

Actually it depends upon the initial condition of the vehicle and how do you maintain it.

Yes one major running cost difference is that you have to change its oil every 2500 kms whereas in case of petrol engine you can change it after every 4-5000 kms depending upon the quality of the oil you are using.
