The 1UZ FJ40 has been very good with the all local modified clutch. Its a heavy duty 1KZ clutch plate (from a Dyna or something) with desi leather work. It lasted us 3 rallies and countless drag abuse on the street. The 2UZ went through its first clutch pretty instantaneously (probably an initial install issue) but since then has been doing well. The Kaikra had a similar clutch but was initially experiencing some slip issues for some reason.
If done properly the adapter plate option works well. The senior lathe guys at citi sadar road (Nikku Ustad and Saeed Kharadia) have mountains of experience in making adapter plates of all sorts which stems of years of converting Jeep CJs to run diesel engines with their original trans / transfer cases.
