I've seen two types of flame kits
the butane one where theres a butane can has a tube feeding the exauast towards the end. turing a nob lets butane flow into the exhaust which then burns and there is a constant flame..i saw a golf with side pipes the flames were licking the roof...didn't look right
there the spark one...again a device fitted into the tail end of the exhaust the spark lights the exsess fuel in the exhaust gases causing a flash...(this looks good) I've been told this can be done with a spark plug.
Oh the other way is if you have a meaty engine and tuned to run fuel rich, with large headers and a through exhaust you can blow flames. i've done this on a bike i had Ducati Monster, with shortened race at high revs it would but only on one side...
