Flame Painting an Impala

Actually...the flames HAVE been painted on, already. And to be honest, they're looking quite delicious. But right now, they're VERY far from my envisaged end-state, little brother...which is why they're going to stay under wraps for a while...until I get them sorted out perfectly. "Andar ke kalakaar" ko asal mein, pin-striping nahin aati.

For now, the flames are going to dry out some more, then we're going to use some rubbing compound on them to get an even, well-blended finish. This will be followed by the pin-striping (I'm thinking in black, after all). Finally, the work of art is going to be covered in some clear over-base...for some depth and shine.

I have a feeling you'll like the finished product, Insha Allah.

The Way Forward

Ok. This actually happens to be uncharted territory. Sure...I've read the tons of literature on flame painting, seen the dozens of obligatory videos that teach you how to do it...but at the end of the day, when it comes to cold steel and acrylic...you learn to improvise. And, of course, hope that nothing f***s up irreparably!

What we're planning from this point onwards, is a gradual merging of the flame pattern against the body colour. Something...ghostly. This is going to require compound, 1200 grit sandpaper, and lots of elbow grease. The services of an artist have been procured for the pinstriping - which, unfortunately, completely eludes me (an unsteady hand, advanced years, yadda yadda). After duly pinstriping it...a couple of coats of hardener / lacquer should add depth to the paint, smoothe the surface, and give it a more surreal look. Which is EXACTLY what we're aiming for.

I gotta admire your handy work with the flames, TOOO goood. Im late with the suggestion but the Impalas shape wasnt Flame material. Flamed cars are better rounded dont you think? Stripes wud have done wonders! BUT flames are always show stoppers so yeah!
And lastly , why doesnt the babe have tints? You do knoe tints complete a car weathr bone stock or stage 3 modified
Love the Chevy hope to see it on road in ISB sometimes GOOOD LUCK!

Briefly, I was tempted to go with stripes and angular patterns that would accentuate the Impala's Coke-bottle styling (yes...it's REALLY called that!), but that would have been too much of a PITA. At some point in time I (or my son for that matter!) plan on rebuilding this beast the right way...frame off...which I don't think was done when the car was recently rebuilt. At that point in time, who knows...maybe a professionally-applied, honest-to-goodness, Hispanic LowRider paint job may be on the cards. For now...this is just me, tinkering around with some paint.

At the moment, giving it a simple-yet-unique look, a killer sound system, and some TLC from the Detailing Crew is all I'd be happy with.

And yes...of course...tints. 3rd degree black.
