FIA declares double diffusers legal

The FIA International Court of Appeal has declared the double-decker diffuser designs used by Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams as legal.

Following overnight deliberation by the judges after a court hearing in Paris on Tuesday, the ICA has rejected the appeals lodged by Ferrari, Red Bull Racing, Renault. BMW Sauber and McLaren had also entered the appeal as affected parties.

A statement issued by the FIA on Wednesday morning said: "The FIA International Court of Appeal has decided to deny the appeals submitted against decisions numbered 16 to 24 taken by the Panel of the Stewards on 26 March at the 2009 Grand Prix of Australia and counting towards the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship.

The FIA has declared that the controversial diffuser designs used by Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams are legal – rejecting an appeal from rival teams.

The devices were originally protested in Melbourne, where the stewards ruled that they were within the regulations.

Ferrari, BMW Sauber, Red Bull and Renault remained unconvinced and appealed the decision, but after a hearing in Paris yesterday, their arguments have been rejected.

A heartiest congratulations to you and everybody else on this achievement by Brawn, Williams and Toyota to defeat the giants of this sport. Now it is interesting to see what other teams do with their diffuser design because they can't test them before bringing them to the weekend.

Newey returns to factory for RB5 redesign

Red Bull technical director Adrian Newey has cancelled his scheduled trip to this weekend's Chinese GP to return to the team's factory and focus his attention on re-designing the RB5's diffuser.

Well after this diffuser issue settlement now all eyes are on the Lie-gate scandal and the most speculations are that they have to face ban the time limit is depending on what WMSC thinks right. The ban ranges from 2 race to 4 months and for whole season. Now most people on other forums are saying why a punishment of such magnitude needed. The answer is simple in last 2 years it is the third time they are facing WMSC first the Spy-gate scandal, then Alonso Hamilton scandal and now this Lie-gate scandal. Just tell me even in an organization such events occurs with one employ did the organization not fire him from the job. In a University when a student found in such activities does University administration did not cancel his registration if in both cases your answer is yes then why a sports team could not face penalty because of such controversies. I remember during 84' season Tyrell Ford got ban because of using illegal cars. So it is not unfair to ban a team for doing such illegal activities.

I agree McLaren should face a ban for their misconduct. this kind of indiscipline by a team can not be tolerated. Hamilton thinks he was played into this situation without he knowing what actually happened. i believe he is lying again and should face even harsher punishment for lying again. i dont see him working with McLaren for long.

It will be very hard for him to redeem his credibility in the eyes of the public and F1 officials. This incident has definitely tainted his career and wont be forgotten for a long time.

This is fun stuff, watching seven teams basically re-launch their cars much like they did before the start of the season. Spain should see B spec cars from all the seven teams....ummm make that five teams because i doubt that Force India, which isn't much of a force,and Toro Rosso will bother. Mclaren could well have a huge advantage as a result of this ruling. They already had big problems with the rear of the car and were in the process of making a new rear wing, floor and engine cover, so they might have a head start. Of course it's not as simple as putting the diffuser on a car and it will be as quick as the Brawn GP. Now their exhaust system is under review! It will take a big effort to catch up the Diffuser three in general and Brawn GP in particular. So here is what i think, we are looking at another Brit being crowned world champion. I wish Rubens will have a bit of luck so we can have a nice championship battle. Outside of Brawn cars the only realistic challenge which is likely to come is from the BMW of Kubica. I don't know how the rest will catch up in time with Brawn GP unless Italians start calling the shots at that team too.

I hope Mclaren are not banned and are fined heavily, maybe have their constructors points taken and given a few race ban suspended ffor a year or so. At this point in time, F1 cannot afford something like that, and besides that there are many examples of teams,drivers lying to the FIA and they were never thrown out. I personally don't see that happening and if it did, I will be sorry and it will be nothing more then Max Mosely getting back at Ron Dennis. I don't like Mclaren and despise Ron Dennis, but i hope his team is treated fairly which doesn't seem to be the case right now. The same goes for Hamilton. He lied and continues to lie to this day, but a suspended race ban would be enough based on past precedents.

On a different note, Bridegstone has brought the super softs to China, so expect teams to struggle again on those tires.

Dennis relinquishes McLaren's F1 duties

The McLaren team has confirmed Ron Dennis is stepping back completely from his involvement with the Formula 1 squad, as AUTOSPORT predicted on Wednesday.

McLaren said on Thursday that Dennis has already handed his responsibility as CEO of McLaren Racing to Martin Whitmarsh, who was named team principal earlier this year.

Dennis will focus entirely on leading the new sports car business, McLaren Automotive, which will now become an independent company, and which plans to launch the first model of McLaren sports cars in 2011.

Dennis: Decision not linked to FIA case

Ron Dennis has denied that his decision to step away completely from his involvement in the Formula 1 team is linked to the imminent FIA hearing the team is facing.

The Woking-based outfit is to go in front of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council on April 29 to answer charges that it lied to stewards - and forced its driver Lewis Hamilton to do so too - during hearings relating to the Australian Grand Prix.

Although in last two years he faces the most controversies of his career but he is a great manager. He is now part of F1 history, he is been there when one of the most awesome battle for the title is going on between the greats Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, he is there when Senna have the fatal accident and I don't know how many other times he was present when some historic events take place. He certainly remember by the F1 world forever.

I laughed for a bit when i read about ron dennis's announcement... focussing on the new line of mclaren sports cars eh... i wonder how many of them will be built on ferrari designed chasis... just a parting shot.

From what I understand Hamilton sr. is working very hard to get his son... who four months ago was willing to sign his career away with mclaren... out of the team and into a new car... apparently ron dennis has been working over time to get daddy calmed down. I still think that for a driver to give a wrong statement, even if being guided to do so, is wrong no matter how they spin it. I wouldnt be surprised if hamilton is in fact dealt with severely... lets face it last year he was the wonder kid who became the face of F1... this year they have a new headliner.... the brawn GP team... hamilton isnt really doing anything for the ratings of the sport at this time. So, considering the FIA is a sporting body run like a political one, I expect hamilton to get a little more than a slap on the wrist... he should anyway.

Ron Dennis had to go. it was very imminent and i think its a very good decission eventhough i am not a big fan of McLaren either but i hope they do better without him. Ron Dennis was a legend in himself there is no denying that but a few bad decissions were made and somebody had to take the responsibility.

Looking forward at this weekend, super softs are going to be a big problem again for the drivers and i hope FIA reconsiders their decission on using super softs and instead use the softer compound.

I agree with you that we might have another Brit. crowned world champion this year and it would be nice to have some sort of a battle for the championship. However, i think outside of Brawn i believe Trulli, Rosberg and Vettel and are going to give Brawn GP a tough time and they seem to be in a better position than Kubica, who by the way is going to be testing KERS in his car this weekend for some better results on race day. lets see how that goes, whereas Ferrari will be testing without KERS and only Italins would know how they are going to make that work. :S
