Gearbox of RKR (LC FJ70)

I am not unhappy, just exploring different possibilities. I have a 4 forward (original) gearbox on my LC and know very little about 4x4s. The entire drivetrain is very torque centric, in the low RPM. While this is great for climbing and off roading, as the amount of torque early on is just crazy, it is not very city friendly. That means the LC revs very low, has awful fuel consumption, lots of noise etc. But I like it.

I am just wondering, could I do a gearbox swap to a 5 forward gearbox that would have a little more distributed powerband through the rev range? Perhaps that would result in better fuel average also? If its too much effort, I will just leave it like it is.

i suggest if the its not giving u any problem.. keep the 4 speed.. your RKR must be with a 3F engine right? you will hav to find a 5 speed that could mate to that engine or else make an plate etc.. keep it stock and enjoy the torque

RKR has such a lovely sound.. love the roaring engine

You bet, its the 3F monster under the hood. Yes, the sound is good, but loud!! I don't usually listen to my CD player when driving the beast, as the sound of the engine is so much better

Is there a 5 speed gearbox that could mate to the 3F?

This Gearbox is available in Rawalpindi market. If you want complete GearBox along with 4x4, expect to pay around 35 grand. Add installation price and may require clutch plate change.

But like others have suggested, it may not be a "direct" bolt on with 3F and may require plate to mate, and few other changes (e.g drive shaft adjustments). I have gone through the same thing few weeks ago. For a petrol engine, I think 4 forward is more then enough while you keep it all orginial.

@ isiddique: thanks. What top speed are you able to reach with your RKR? I have only had the balls to push it to 110km, but it gets noisy and scary, so i stopped trying to push it any further. Have you experienced a faster top speed since going to a 5 speed box? What about the torque curve, did that change as well when you changed the gearbox? BTW- thats a great ride you got, very good looking.

Rao bhai... Jeeps are not designed for top speed.. take it to offroad beating where top speed doesnt matter.. i suggest take it to a trip to babusar or noori naar top.. you'll love its performance

even if you put a 5 speed.. there will be only marginal increase in top speed.. noise i doubt.. coz its not only the gear.. the whole areodynamics of a jeep are not for speed

^^^^^ I know, I know Just getting used to jeeps, its taking a while. I will tell you though, I have a 2008 civic for the wife, I drove it yesterday after nearly 1 month, blah!!!! I did not enjoy it at all!!! It felt like a formula 1 car, but I missed my leaf springs!!! Lol

I will leave the gearbox alone for now. The problem is that I live in Lahore, and there is no decent offroading close by, did not find the time to take it north yet. Anyone know any offroading spots near or in Lahore?

I saw the spare part prices and my wallet refused to open! Nahin yaar, I was going to get the range rover, but needed two cars. For that range I would have to sell my civic and get another smaller car, but could not make the effort. Plus, the range would have been my Rolls Royce, and I was not going to take my Rolls offroading!

Boys try h 55f gearbox it will bring ur 500 revs down, cause extra highway gear 5th overdrive, plus if u change front rear diffs to bit smaller ratios u will get better fuel , speed and low revs but will loose some torque but still enough to enjoy ur off-road adventures
