As Storm said - if the builder is paying attention to his work considering tolerances etc. and the person assembling it cleans it and assembles it with proper tools and parts including sealants and then breaking them in properly.
Breaking in my style is 2nd gear pull at full load throttle to 90% allowable engine speed - then coasting back to no load speed, repeat 10 times - pull aside shut off wait for cool down, check fluids, start up repeat 5 times again, then drive back normally. This seats the rings like no -ones business..
If you baby the throttle with a new engine at no load - you will glaze out the cylinder walls before the rings actually seat into them.
The life of the engine depends on the driver actually, if you are torturing your engine - might as well send it to the junkyard now..
