google maps may or may not be accurate (although I don't think google maps is that inaccurate, it should be correct to plus/minus 20meters), but GPS is more accurate than car meter.
the car could have tyres of different size than original(probably bigger), or it could have different tire pressure or he could have gone zigzag (which would increase the distance). There's ALOT that could go wrong with the car odometer reading. and not nearly as much with google maps. and gps data can be considered to be almost absolutely flawless...
and u are civil engineer, you know how they(i mean u guys) use radios to make sure the building is straight, or the distances are within specs...
I would say that ur odometer is problem.
