Salman Taseer was assassinated on Janurary 4, 2011, at Kohsar Market in Sector F6, Islamabad, Pakistan[11]. He was returning to his car after meeting a friend for lunch, when he was shot 27 times by an automatic rifle at close range. He died instantly. The assailant, Malik Mumtaz Qadri was part of the security detail provided to him by the Elite Police Force. After the act, the assailant laid down his weapon and turned himself in. Salman Taseer was in Islamabad to attend meetings which were being held in light of political dropout of other opposition parties. He had previously been to the Presidential Palace, the Senate and The Interior Ministry.[12]. Soon after his assassination, protest erupted in different parts of Punjab province, protestors burned tyres and blocked traffic in Lahore.[13]
Qadri reportedly said he killed Taseer due to his vocal opposition of the Blasphemy law in Pakistan.[14][15] Notably, Taseer made headlines when he appealed for the pardon of a Christian woman, Asia Bibi,[16][dubious – discuss] who had been sentenced to death for blasphemy.[17] It was suspected that this was the main reason for his assassination
